Could Final Fantasy 14’s mobile game face backlash due to microtransactions?
Recently, reports have emerged from the well-known source Umadori regarding the upcoming release of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile (FF14) – set to launch in China this June. This version may allow players to use real money to bypass tedious in-game quests. Although this information has not been officially confirmed, it has quickly stirred the FF14 community.

Specifically, the microtransaction system in the mobile version will not include gacha mechanics (a type of lottery system) but will allow players to spend money to perform tasks such as upgrading to extreme difficulty levels through a currency called “wind currents”; bypassing job quests, which tend to be quite lengthy and complex. Purchasing cosmetic items will cost between 60 yen (~$0.42) and 200 yen (~$1.40).

With 22 different jobs and 16 color options available for customization on characters, many are concerned that “optimizing” their characters without significant effort will lead to high costs. Although prices are relatively reasonable, the total expenses can add up significantly for those wanting a “fully equipped” experience.
FF14 fans are worried, but it’s not all doom and gloom?
Quickly, a portion of players has expressed discontent, claiming that the addition of purchasable options to bypass quests or upgrade characters with real money destroys the gameplay experience of Final Fantasy 14. However, many others seem relatively indifferent, as the original PC version already offers options to skip content or enhance characters for prices up to $25.

Furthermore, the Mog Station system on PC has already been selling cosmetic bundles and items at varying prices. If the rumors are true, prices for items in the mobile version could be even higher, leaving some players feeling more “shocked” than they initially anticipated.

However, the concern remains that the feature of “paying to save time” is merely a part of a cash-grab scheme. If the developers exploit microtransactions too much, FF14 Mobile could lose a significant portion of its loyal player base who are attached to the original spirit of this franchise.
