After the well-known names like “Iron Man”, “Captain America”, “The Avengers”… making a strong impact and establishing impressive box office records, Marvel has decided to expand its cinematic universe even further by venturing into the realm of television. Whether it’s on ABC, Hulu, or Netflix, Marvel has a plethora of projects currently in the works. Therefore, we have compiled a list in this article to help you better understand the cinematic universe Marvel is developing.
1. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
As the first major television project from Marvel, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” premiered during its third season. The story begins with Agent Coulson being mysteriously resurrected, which leads to the discovery of a new group of superpowered individuals known as The Inhumans.
This series is closely related to the Marvel films, with events from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” directly influencing the first season, while the conflicts within S.H.I.E.L.D. in the second season lead directly into “Avengers: Age of Ultron”.
Currently, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” has been greenlit for a fourth season, which is particularly exciting due to the anticipated appearance of Ghost Rider.
2. Agent Carter
Taking us back to the post-World War II era, Agent Carter follows Peggy Carter after her “boyfriend”, Captain America, has gone missing. While the Marvel cinematic universe has been dominated by male superheroes, Peggy’s story brings a fresh perspective.
However, due to low viewership and a crowded schedule for the lead actress Hayley Atwell, ABC decided to cancel Agent Carter after two seasons.
3. Cloak and Dagger
A fresh project from Marvel on ABC, “Cloak and Dagger” has garnered significant attention as it is the first superhero-themed series focused on young love. The casting process is currently underway.
4. Damage Control
If “Cloak and Dagger” is a budding romance, “Damage Control” is a comedic take on a company specializing in cleaning up after superhero battles. Currently, there is very little information available regarding this project.
5. Daredevil
Despite being considered a “miss” in the film realm, the series “Daredevil” was a critical success. It captivated fans with its darker, more violent atmosphere than any previous Marvel creation. In its second season, “Daredevil” introduced new characters like Punisher and Elektra, receiving overwhelmingly positive reactions from viewers. Netflix is set to air the third season, but due to various issues, it may be postponed until 2018.
6. The Defenders
Marvel’s TV version of The Avengers will unite Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, with Elektra and Hellcat also making appearances. At SDCC 2016, Marvel Entertainment officially announced that the series “The Defenders” would premiere in late 2017.
7. Iron Fist
The martial arts master has now joined the Netflix Marvel universe alongside Daredevil and Jessica Jones. This project has faced delays as producers want to ensure the character’s backstory fits seamlessly with the darker tones of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Ultimately, this series has also been greenlit and is expected to air in 2017.
8. Jessica Jones
This is Marvel’s critically acclaimed second Netflix series. While “Daredevil” captivated audiences with its violence and action, the first season of “Jessica Jones” focused on psychological and emotional depth. The performances, particularly by Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, David Tennant as Kilgrave, and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, received praise. The series garnered positive feedback comparable to “Daredevil”, but Marvel has recently announced that season two of “Jessica Jones” will come after the first season of “The Defenders”.
9. Luke Cage
Mike Colter’s Luke Cage made a significant impact in “Jessica Jones”, and he is set to star in his own TV series. Alongside him, Simone Missick will portray Misty Knight, who partners with Luke Cage. At this year’s SDCC event, we learned a lot about this new series, which is set to premiere on September 30, 2016.
10. Marvel’s Most Wanted
A spinoff from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”, “Marvel’s Most Wanted” will focus on two characters, Bobbi and Hunter, as they embark on a new journey. Initially, ABC ordered a pilot episode, but later decided to cancel the project.
11. The Punisher
After the success of “Daredevil” in its second season, Jon Bernthal was deemed perfect for the role of The Punisher. Soon, he will have his own series on Netflix, under the direction of showrunner Steve Lightfoot. “The Punisher” is expected to premiere in early 2017.
12. Runaways
“Runaways” is a popular comic from Marvel, focusing on six teenagers who discover their parents are supervillains. The series will be adapted into a Marvel TV show on Hulu, crafted by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators behind “Gossip Girl”.
