Known as the “Romeo and Juliet” of the eastern region, the love story of Lu Zong Ba and Chu An Dai is a legendary tale that has become famous in Chinese history. The film adaptation of this beautiful romance has turned the talented young couple into household names in the Chinese film industry, closely tied to the cultural heritage of the region. It has also showcased popular actors such as Li Zhi Tian, Dong Ke, and Ha Nhuan Dong, who have become stars in their own right.
For a long time, Lu Zong Ba and Chu An Dai have been considered a legendary couple in romantic folklore. Despite the passage of time, the existence of these characters in history remains a significant question, sparking curiosity and intrigue.
According to the story, Chu An Dai is depicted as a beautiful girl, who, in pursuit of knowledge, disguises herself as a boy to attend school. During her time there, she meets and falls in love with Lu Zong Ba, a poor but intelligent young man. Despite their love, societal pressures keep them apart. Chu An Dai is pressured by her parents to marry Ma Van Tai, a wealthy and powerful official, which leads to great sorrow for Lu Zong Ba. On the day of their separation, Chu An Dai stands at the gates, weeping until she can no longer see her beloved. Legend has it that two butterflies appear at that moment, symbolizing their eternal bond: “Though we may not have been born on the same day, we shall die on the same day, same month, same year.”
For the general public, this may seem like a mere fairy tale. However, historians and scholars are more eager to uncover the truth: Did Lu Zong Ba and Chu An Dai truly exist in history?
In 2016, in Jiangxi Province, China, researchers discovered a tombstone believed to belong to Lu Zong Ba. Many scholars believe that Lu Zong Ba was a real historical figure, serving as an official during the Eastern Jin dynasty (266 – 420 AD). He was noted for his integrity and contributions to governance, helping the people gain respect and establishing a long-lasting legacy.
Clearly, the existence of Lu Zong Ba in history has a foundation that extends at least into the mid-century and has made a significant impact. However, the character named Chu An Dai has never been substantiated by any evidence. Experts suggest that it is possible that the story of this legendary couple was created to embellish the legacy of Lu Zong Ba. Over time, it has evolved into a romantic tale that continues to be passed down to this day.
Nevertheless, the love story between Lu Zong Ba and Chu An Dai remains a question that ignites curiosity. Within the same area of Lu Zong Ba’s tomb, a 1,700-year-old stone tablet has been found, engraved with two hearts. This may symbolize or serve as proof of a love story, but it is challenging to ascertain its authenticity.
