The highly anticipated blockbuster of late 2016, Suicide Squad, has yet to be released, but it has already received a significant amount of negative criticism from international film critics. Many of these critiques focus on the film’s content and the way the characters are developed.
In response to the negative feedback, the film’s director, David Ayer, quickly took to Twitter to address the situation with a strong message.
This quote is from the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, which translates into Vietnamese as: “To die fighting is better than to live on your knees.” Despite the different contexts, David Ayer’s statement presents a clear viewpoint, placing all the blame on fate for creating a situation where one must compromise with rules set by others.
Continuing with his explanation, David Ayer noted: “Zapata’s quote is how I express my love for my film and my complete belief in it. I made this film for the fans. It is the biggest challenge of my career.”
It is clear that these statements cannot simply alter the opinions of film critics or those who are critical of the film’s content, as the core reason for the criticism lies in the stark differences between comic books and films. However, once again, Ayer firmly asserted that the Squad was made for the fans, not for the critics – this is one of the key points he emphasized during the film’s press tour.
According to projections, Suicide Squad is set to be released worldwide starting August 5, 2016. At this point, it is still too early to discuss the success of this superhero blockbuster. However, one thing is certain: 98% of the audience surveyed want to experience this film, and David Ayer seems unconcerned about the negative reviews that have emerged.
