Dragon Ball Daima has created a buzz among fans with its latest episodes showcasing a completely new version of Super Saiyan 4. It appears that creator Akira Toriyama wants to ensure that this new version will be a definitive take for the anime.
Dragon Ball Daima marks the beginning of a new adventure in the official timeline of Dragon Ball, as Goku and Supreme Kai embark on a journey into the Demon Realm. This anime features a storyline crafted by Akira Toriyama himself, introducing significant changes to the official narrative, including fresh details regarding the Demon Realm. However, these changes are not the only noteworthy adjustments.
Along with numerous smaller details about the Demon Realm and its connections to the universe, which we will see later in Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Daima has also added a crucial plot element: Goku is currently training to achieve the form of Super Saiyan 4. Additionally, Daima introduces a new version of Super Saiyan 4 during Goku’s climactic battle with Gomah.
As explained by Dragon Ball Daima’s animation director Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru in a recent interview with DBTimes, Akira Toriyama himself was the designer of this new version of Super Saiyan 4, along with some alterations.

Dragon Ball Creator Designs New Super Saiyan 4 Goku
When asked whether the designer of the new Super Saiyan 4 form was indeed Toriyama, Nakatsuru clarified that it was indeed Toriyama who made this design. He resolved the ongoing debate among fans once and for all, stating: “No, this time in Daima, it was Toriyama-sensei who designed Super Saiyan 4. He made it in a way that turned it into ‘Daima’s Super Saiyan 4.’
Thus, while Nakatsuru contributed to the animation designs, Toriyama himself was the final designer of this new version of Super Saiyan 4.
This resolution helps clarify the discussion among fans since Super Saiyan 4 has often been a point of contention within the broader Dragon Ball narrative, not just in its canonicity but also with respect to the new designs specifically crafted by Toriyama for this fresh anime. This distinction helps differentiate Dragon Ball Daima from what was previously seen in Dragon Ball GT and even links it to transformations that Goku will unlock in future episodes of Dragon Ball Super.

What Does This Mean for Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball’s Universe?
Now that it has been confirmed that Toriyama has designed a new version of Super Saiyan 4, this form will be included in any future potential releases. This is crucial since one of the most discussed topics among fans regarding the SS4 form has been its eventual return.
Given that Dragon Ball Daima is set after the events of the Majin Buu arc but before the Battle of Gods arc, which kicks off Dragon Ball Super, it indicates that Goku has unlocked this form but has not yet decided whether to utilize it in any future battles for any reason.
However, if Dragon Ball revisits the storylines of Dragon Ball Super or any other Dragon Ball-related anime, this new (and fully finalized) version of Super Saiyan 4 could serve as a compelling addition.
