Every week, Akira Toriyama’s archive continues to unveil rare gems from the rich history of Dragon Ball.
And now, for the first time in over 35 years, fans of Dragon Ball have the opportunity to witness Goku donning a striking orange martial arts uniform, symbolizing his character, alongside a classic black tuxedo.
As detailed on the official Dragon Ball website, this illustration was originally designed for the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1989, released in December 1988. The cover features Goku in a black tuxedo with a bright pink floral shirt. This marks one of the very first and unique appearances of Goku in a formal outfit.
According to established tradition, the Dragon Ball website introduced this illustration within a brief 24-hour window prior to its release in Toriyama’s archive.
New content is typically added to the archive multiple times each week. Each image showcases rare depictions of Goku featured in the Shonen Jump series.

Since the debut of Dragon Ball, Goku has predominantly appeared in simple martial arts attire, as fashion was not a primary focus within the series. Notably, in Dragon Ball Z, Goku often wore a fighting gi, which became his signature look.
Given the intense nature of Goku’s battles, he is rarely seen participating in social events outside of martial arts tournaments. However, there is a notable exception where Goku wore a tuxedo for a special occasion alongside his wife, Chi-Chi.
This October, Toei Animation launched a series of animated films celebrating the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball, titled Dragon Ball Daima. Set immediately after the Buu saga, the film follows Goku and the Z fighters as they combat the evil king Gomah, who has transformed them into children. Following this, Goku embarks on a journey to the end of the universe to rescue Dende and restore their original forms.
