Yamcha is one of the most unique characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. Initially, he appeared as a skilled warrior and a charming companion. However, throughout the series, Yamcha was often relegated to the role of a side character, particularly when it came to romantic relationships.

Yamcha was once a significant character during the early days of Dragon Ball. He was portrayed as a skilled martial artist and Bulma’s love interest. Their relationship had its ups and downs. However, the character dynamic changed dramatically with the introduction of characters like Vegeta.
In most of the battles Yamcha engaged in, he often ended up defeated. Creator Akira Toriyama seemed to consistently minimize Yamcha’s role, allowing other characters like Gohan, Vegeta, and future Trunks to shine. While Yamcha became increasingly irrelevant, Vegeta established himself as a strong warrior and eventually won Bulma’s heart.

Eventually, with the emergence of the Saiyan prince, even Bulma, who had been Yamcha’s long-time girlfriend, fell for Vegeta, leaving Yamcha in despair.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, a popular video game based on the Dragon Ball Z storyline, has provided fans with insights into why Yamcha and Bulma broke up. It turns out Yamcha was “unaware” of the budding feelings between Bulma and Vegeta. This moment, along with the subsequent introduction of their son Trunks, marks a significant turning point in the series.

On another note, Yamcha’s romantic involvement with Glass in Super Dragon Ball Heroes has shown a bit more depth. However, Glass’s character was designed to be younger than Yamcha, making their relationship somewhat unrealistic.
This is just one example of Yamcha’s misfortunes when it comes to romance. It raises the question: “Does Yamcha have what it takes to find true love?”
First and foremost, Yamcha must be viewed as a multifaceted character. He is not only a capable warrior but also has a good-natured personality. Beyond being a skilled fighter, he was a famous baseball player. However, these attributes often left him overshadowed by other characters in the franchise.
While characters like Goku, Krillin, and Bulma are often depicted as finding love, Yamcha also has the potential to achieve this. One can only hope that creator Akira Toriyama will include more of Yamcha’s story in future arcs to give him a chance at a fulfilling relationship.
