As Halloween 2023 approaches, the global cinematic landscape is set to showcase a variety of horror masterpieces from reputable studios, continuing a tradition of spine-chilling tales that captivate audiences during this spooky season.
Talk To Me (August 11)
The first major release for the horror film season is the A24 production titled Talk To Me. This film has been highlighted as the most anticipated horror movie from A24 for the end of the year. This studio has consistently produced high-quality horror films, with previous hits like Hereditary and Midsommar.
The plot revolves around a group of friends who discover a mysterious hand that allows them to communicate with spirits from the afterlife. What starts as a fun game quickly spirals out of control, unleashing horrifying supernatural forces. The ghostly hand in Talk To Me promises to lead audiences into a dark and chilling world of despair, chaos, and haunting imagery not previously seen on screen.
The Nun II (September 8)
After four years, the horror icon Valak returns in the highly anticipated sequel, The Nun II. Valak first appeared in James Wan’s film The Conjuring 2 and has since become a global sensation. This demonic character has inspired many spin-off stories in the horror genre, with the original The Nun being the highest-grossing film in the entire Conjuring franchise.
The new film is set in a quaint French convent during the 1950s. Following a series of chilling events, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) will confront Valak once again, having previously faced this malevolent spirit in the earlier film. This time, Valak will unleash a new wave of terror that audiences have been eagerly anticipating.
The Exorcist: Believer (October 13)
Regarded as one of the most influential horror films of all time, The Exorcist has maintained its status as a pivotal piece in the horror genre, inspiring countless films over the decades. After more than 50 years, this iconic horror film will officially return to the big screen with a direct sequel titled The Exorcist: Believer. Produced by Universal and Blumhouse Productions, the film will feature two possessed girls, Angela and Katherine. Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris McNeil, returning to confront the demons that plagued her daughter 50 years ago.
Five Nights At Freddy’s (October 27)
Another well-known entertainment franchise is set to make its mark on the big screen this year. Five Nights At Freddy’s is a film adaptation of the popular survival horror game by ScottGames. This game takes place in a fictional pizza restaurant called “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza,” where the animatronic character Freddy Fazbear comes to life. Players assume the role of a night security guard, using cameras, lights, doors, and vents to protect themselves from these unsettling robotic characters.
This film adaptation is a collaborative effort from Universal and Blumhouse Productions. The main character, Mike, will be played by actor Josh Hutcherson. As the night wears on, Mike discovers the strange occurrences at this haunted establishment, uncovering the dark secrets of why Freddy Fazbear must remain locked away, revealing the horrors he has yet to face.
