According to SCMP, Hong Kong model and actress Erena So has caused a stir by announcing her entry into the adult film industry in Japan.
The decision was not made lightly. The 26-year-old has spent a year connecting with Japanese production houses and reaching out to companies to get support before landing her first role.
“I hope to change the way people think,” she said.
In an interview with SCMP, Erena So expressed her hope to change the perception of Chinese individuals regarding the adult film industry and the personalities willing to step into this realm.
“I hope to become a figure who makes an impact. When you do something that others can’t, people will start to listen to your voice,” she added.
Furthermore, the actress mentioned that through her debut in 18+ films, she could change society’s views on adult film actors and the nature of the profession. She does not wish for society to judge her based on a lack of respect.

Erena So is considered the first person from Hong Kong to join Japan’s 18+ film industry. Her announcement has sparked a wave of debate among the local population. Reports indicate that the studio’s website has been overwhelmed with traffic, leading to crashes.
In response to her newfound fame, Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, sent a congratulatory message to the actress. However, his office clarified that they do not have any official congratulations for adult film actresses and the police were involved in the situation.
Erena So shared that she has received numerous supportive messages from Hong Kong netizens. Some commenters have remarked on the “exploitation” of actresses.
However, So recalls past controversies, particularly surrounding rapper Tyson Yoshi, who sparked outrage after being discovered following adult film stars in Japan. She feels that there is a double standard applied to actresses in Hong Kong.
“Why should it be considered shameful to do what we want to do while needing to wait for others’ approval?” she questioned.
Dealing with family concerns, changing preconceived notions is tough
Two scholars interviewed by SCMP noted that Erena So’s actions contradict the prevailing conservative trends of Hong Kong.
Yvonne Yau Hoi-yan, a research lecturer from Lingnan University specializing in gender studies, indicated that women from Hong Kong entering the adult film industry cannot escape societal pressures regarding morality and family.
Conversely, the thriving industry in Japan reflects cultural differences in attitudes toward adult films compared to the unique context of Hong Kong. The broader legal framework in Japan allows for more participation in the industry, attracting more people who are financially savvy.

Despite some supportive comments, expert Yvonne Yau Hoi-yan believes the 26-year-old actress will find it challenging to change audience perceptions.
“I don’t think the audience will readily accept her declaration in hopes of bringing serious change to the adult film industry. There can only be a shift in the awareness of those lacking understanding regarding the industry, while the users of this industry will continue to be judged,” the expert stated.
Moreover, Yvonne Yau Hoi-yan emphasized that it would be even more difficult to change perceptions in the Asian context, where discussions about emotions and intimacy are often taboo.
“Such viewpoints cannot change through a simple statement, a book, or even a seminar; it requires the engagement of many individuals,” Yau noted.
Diana Kwok Kan, an associate professor and social work professional specializing in gender education at the University of Hong Kong, pointed out that there is a significant difference when discussing issues related to sexuality in a formal environment versus in social media spaces—where anonymity permits more open discussions.
Discussions at the policy or educational level are noticeably more conservative compared to social media, where individuals can express differing opinions on various issues from LGBTQ+ rights to gender and sexuality.
She noted the influence of religion and belief systems, which can create more conservative views regarding gender norms. Additionally, traditional Chinese values emphasize marriage and childbirth, which can further complicate acceptance. However, Diana Kwok Kan believes Erena So may still face challenges as she transitions her career to Japan.
For rising stars in Hong Kong, family remains a significant and often challenging aspect, particularly for someone entering the adult film industry. New actresses in this field often do not receive familial support. So has not been in contact with her family since they discovered her involvement in the adult film industry.
“Why can’t I do what I want to do while having to wait for others’ approval?” she expressed.
Yet, Erena So clarified that she does not intend to be solely defined by her role as an adult film star. After completing her adult film projects, she hopes to transition into various film roles and television programs. Many well-known adult film actors have successfully crossed over into mainstream entertainment and received recognition for their talents.
“I genuinely enjoy performing. I hope to continue acting until I can no longer do so,” she told SCMP.
