When Guardians of the Galaxy first launched, few would have imagined that it could become a blockbuster and generate massive revenue for Marvel. The characters of Guardians of the Galaxy were relatively obscure in the vast universe of superhero comic books, and many audiences were surprised to discover that they existed alongside beloved heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.
Following the success of the first film, the project for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now in full swing. The movie is set to release on May 5, 2017, and this time, we will be introduced to a new member of the cosmic crew, named Mantis.
In the comic book source material, Mantis was originally a member of the Avengers but later left to join the Guardians of the Galaxy. Mantis is depicted as a young woman of mixed Vietnamese and extraterrestrial descent. She was born and raised in Vietnam, and her father is a being from another planet.
Sources suggest that Mantis will play a key role in the Guardians of the Galaxy’s adventures. She is trained in various martial arts and possesses unique abilities. By the time she becomes an adult, Mantis had already undergone extensive training and learned to “come down from the mountain” to gather real-world experiences. She had to work in a bar and, after a series of events, joined the Avengers before eventually switching teams to the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Mantis’s powers in the comics include the ability to manipulate physical matter and enhance her speed, making her a formidable combatant. Additionally, her unique communication skills with the Cotati, a high-level species in the universe, also make her a valuable asset to the team.
It is noteworthy that the introduction of Mantis serves to replace the character Groot, who sacrificed himself to protect his teammates in the first film. Groot’s eventual resurrection at the end of the film, however, leaves him as a small sapling, not yet capable of achieving his full size as before. Therefore, adding Mantis to the team is essential to maintain engaging content for the film.
It remains to be seen whether Mantis will resonate with hardcore fans or not, but the inclusion of a character of Vietnamese descent is sure to stir excitement among audiences in Vietnam. Hopefully, the filmmakers will retain Mantis’s original traits from the comics, allowing her to maintain her roots and connection to Hue, Vietnam. This way, we can look forward to another blockbuster film shot in Vietnam.
