As the movie season for Halloween kicks off, Ouija: Origin of Evil (Vietnamese Title: Trò Chơi Gọi Hồn 2) has emerged as a significant horror film success at the box office. In Vietnam, the film grossed nearly 13 billion VND just three days after its release. This achievement places it among the top-grossing films in the region, exceeding revenue in the Philippines by approximately 2.5 billion VND. Meanwhile, in the North America region, Ouija: Origin of Evil has impressively earned 14 million USD within its opening weekend. Currently, the film ranks in the Top 5 highest-grossing films of the week, accumulating 24.6 million USD. The film’s global revenue has reached 43.7 million USD and is projected to continue growing as Ouija: Origin of Evil “expands its reach” to nine additional countries next week, including France, Switzerland, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The first installment of this horror franchise debuted in 2014 and contributed to the thriving horror genre of that year. Ouija: Origin of Evil continues the narrative with high expectations, especially as it is helmed by the renowned horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, who is known for creating intense and engaging cinematic experiences. After the tremendous success of Oculus (2013), Flanagan has returned to deliver a well-crafted film centered around the danger of a Ouija board, known for its ominous associations. Additionally, the film benefits from the involvement of Jason Blum, a prominent producer in the horror film industry, responsible for several successful franchises such as Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Sinister.
With effective jump scares and haunting scenes, Ouija: Origin of Evil is the standout horror film of this Halloween season.
Ouija: Origin of Evil is set 50 years before the events of the first film, focusing on a family of three children who unwittingly use a Ouija board to communicate with the dead. The film explores the dark consequences of their innocent actions as the Ouija board opens a gateway for a malevolent spirit to invade their home, leading to devastating consequences for the family. Set against a backdrop of the 1960s, Ouija: Origin of Evil is regarded as one of the most captivating horror stories in cinematic history. On professional film review sites, the film scored 65 points, matching the rating of The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist. Meanwhile, on Rotten Tomatoes, it surpassed the horror blockbuster Insidious with a score of 82 points compared to 80 points.
The film continues to be widely screened across cinemas nationwide.
