Despite being a prominent actress, Nguyen Thu has not appeared on screen much in recent years. Many fans still remember her for her role as the “Sister of the Legendary Fighter” in the 2004 classic comedy film Kungfu Hustle, directed by Stephen Chow.
According to 8Days, Nguyen Thu recently participated in a 100-day celebration for the grandson of fellow actress Van Tuyet Nhi, who is also a close friend. Many fans were surprised to see the star from Kungfu Hustle make an appearance. “She seems to have aged quite a bit since the time of Kungfu Hustle, not looking like the fiery woman she used to be,” some spectators commented.
The image of the character “Bao To Ba” from the film has left a deep impression on audiences. Nguyen Thu’s portrayal of the character, complete with a unique outfit and captivating hairstyle, has created a lasting legacy in the hearts of viewers. “Bao To Ba” is often remembered for her fierce personality and unwavering presence. Few people know that the character was inspired by a real-life figure known as “Tieu Long Nu”.
In the film, the character “Sister of the Legendary Fighter” is depicted as a master of martial arts, renowned for her skillful techniques and unique fighting style that captivates audiences.
Born in 1948, Nguyen Thu began her martial arts training at a young age. After facing numerous challenges in her training, she joined the “Thach Tieu Phuc” group, led by martial arts master Vu Chiem Nguyen, where she was the only female member.
Over the years, the group has produced many well-known names, including Nguyen Long (Hong Kim Bao), Nguyen Lau (Thanh Long), Nguyen Buu, Nguyen Khue, Nguyen Hoa, and Nguyen Thu. These names are often associated with the martial arts community.
As her career progressed, Nguyen Thu chose to focus on her family, stepping back from the spotlight. She later married a bank employee and took on a more domestic role while managing her family life. After having two children, a son and a daughter, her marriage faced challenges, including rumors of infidelity. Ultimately, she gained custody of the children following her divorce, but had to navigate financial pressures as well.
Recently, Stephen Chow has unexpectedly re-emerged in the film industry, inviting Nguyen Thu to participate in his latest projects. This opportunity has reignited her passion for acting, despite the challenges posed by her lengthy absence from the screen.
Nguyen Thu’s return to the public eye has been met with mixed reactions, but she remains determined to make a comeback. The actress, who has faced various obstacles throughout her life, is now focused on rebuilding her career in the competitive world of film.
Before filming the kung fu masterpiece, Stephen Chow requested Nguyen Thu to gain weight for her role as the character. Within two months, she successfully gained 15 kg and brought Chow’s vision to life.
“I was very uncertain at first, especially since I had previously declined. I had thought about this for a long time; everyone knows Stephen Chow is a very serious person on set. I was worried that I would not be able to meet his expectations. Fortunately, I was able to fulfill the role,” Nguyen Thu shared.
Due to her outstanding performance in Kungfu Hustle, Nguyen Thu received the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2005 Golden Horse and Kim Ma Awards.
At the age of 73, Nguyen Thu lives alone but finds comfort in knowing that her two children are now grown and independent. According to ET Today, her daughter works as a bank manager while her son is employed in Hanoi.
