Just by looking at the stills, we can see that we are in the midst of watching Dragon Ball Z, unaware that the God of Destruction, Beerus, has long been lurking beneath the surface like a hidden gem. It turns out that during Gohan’s training with the Z Sword, when Old Kaioshin appeared, there was a hint about Beerus’ omnipotence. A small detail in Chapter 285 of Dragon Ball Z, released in the ’90s, serves as the key to this unexpected twist in Dragon Ball Super.

Let’s recall the scene where Goku and Gohan wield the sword and free Old Kaioshin! Do you remember who sealed the god away? None other than Beerus, the God of Destruction, whose name has become familiar in Dragon Ball Super nearly 30 years later.
In an interview, creator Akira Toriyama revealed that the character of Beerus, with his fiery personality, was inspired by Old Kaioshin. During a fierce debate with Old Kai in a tournament about 75 million years ago, in a moment of desperation, Beerus sealed Old Kaioshin within the Z Sword. And it’s worth noting that this event occurred long before Beerus shone in Dragon Ball Super and the film Battle of Gods.

Interestingly, back in 1994, when this chapter was written, Beerus hadn’t yet appeared in Toriyama’s thoughts. However, following the failure of Dragon Ball Evolution, it pushed Toriyama to decide to pull back the narrative to “revamp” but still kept his original plot, leading to the emergence of “Dragon Ball Super,” where we see the intriguing connection between Old Kaioshin and Beerus.
Dragon Ball Super begins with Beerus awakening from a long slumber and speaks of the Saiyans who once battled against Frieza and Majin Buu. Elder Kai introduces Beerus as a terrifying character who is almost as fearsome as Buu.

As the God of Destruction, Beerus’ mission is to eliminate planets to maintain balance in the universe. However, it’s stated that Beerus only acts according to the orders of the Supreme Kais, and if he feels bored, he will destroy. In terms of strength, Beerus is the most powerful being in Universe 7, and even the Kaios and Supreme Kais must fear him. Beerus possesses enough power to destroy the Universe, eliminate the God of Creation, or even wipe out the entire Heavenly Realm.
The appearance of Beerus and his attendant Whis has marked the beginning of Dragon Ball Super and has elevated the series to new heights. Currently, with the Dragon Ball Super anime being reanimated, fans are eagerly anticipating new adventures and breathtaking events in the Dragon Ball universe.
