QQ reports that the latest film from Jackie Chan, Hidden Strike, featuring international star John Cena, has not been released in China. The film’s international box office revenue has only reached around $5 million, causing Jackie Chan to lose more than 500 million Yuan (nearly $70 million).
According to QQ, even if Hidden Strike were to be released in China, its box office performance would not be promising due to poor reviews. The film is compared to Chan’s previous work, Railroad Tigers, but it seems to have lost its appeal to Chinese audiences over time.
Jackie Chan’s recent releases have struggled to attract viewers, particularly following a series of consecutive failures. Moreover, Hidden Strike reflects a declining trend in Jackie Chan’s influence in the international market.
“Jackie Chan’s films have become less interesting, and this is truly a cause for concern,” QQ commented.

Jackie Chan has reportedly lost 1.9 billion Yuan (over $260 million) in the past six years due to the failure of films like The Foreigner, which lost 300 million Yuan, and Detective Chinatown 3 which only grossed 160 million Yuan, while production costs were 350 million Yuan. Vanguard, another collaboration with Hollywood stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charles Dance, only earned 9.19 million USD globally, while the production cost was 50 million USD, resulting in a loss of over 45 million USD.
At the end of 2022, Jackie Chan released Spiritual Journey. Newcomer Ngô Kinh participated in a guest role to attract viewers. However, the film’s premise was not engaging, making it tough to compete with other blockbuster releases around the Lunar New Year. The film only grossed 210 million Yuan, falling short of the 230 million Yuan mark.
Currently, no works by Jackie Chan have received ratings above 5 on Douban, indicating that the once-renowned star’s reputation is declining.

Looking ahead, Jackie Chan has three upcoming projects: Legend of the Dragon – a sequel to the classic film Dragon Blade that audiences have loved, the project Plan P which is now in development, and an animated film The Great Dog Detective that is set to collaborate with Ngô Kinh. Fans are concerned that if the actor continues to face failures, he may struggle to find suitable roles and innovative creative ideas.
