The Strength of Gojo: Is It Overrated in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Before delving into the question at hand, it’s important to note the ongoing troubles surrounding those who misuse cursed techniques. On one hand, sorcerers are currently facing an increasing number of cursed spirits, yet they lack the time to focus on those who misuse these techniques for evil purposes. The state of the world has become more dire than ever, but all of this has changed in the last 28 years.
The deterioration of the Jujutsu world can only be truly understood through the lens of a single cursed spirit. Those who misuse cursed techniques are not only unrepentant but also growing stronger by the day, largely due to Gojo. As a result, the collective strength of the sorcerers has seen a significant increase in recent years.
Gojo is well aware of his potential, perhaps more than anyone else. In his battle with Toji, he referred to himself as “the honored one.” Even Kenjaku, one of the most formidable antagonists in the series, did not dare to directly confront Gojo, instead focusing entirely on sealing him away in a cursed domain.
After Gojo was freed from his seal, Kenjaku chose to hide behind Sukuna in preparation for a battle against the strongest. Kenjaku knows full well that Gojo could easily overpower him if given the chance. Even in the fight against Sukuna, Gojo was still able to showcase his own strength. However, the fate of Gojo remains uncertain.
Despite everything that has transpired, the narrative seems to suggest that Gojo has yet to fully engage in a battle of wits with Sukuna. Does this mean that everything Gojo has claimed about being able to defeat the King of Curses is merely a facade to elevate his status?
Is Gojo’s Strength Overrated in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Before we dive deeper into this question, let’s revisit the first confrontation between Gakuganji and Satoru Gojo in Chapter 18. Gojo holds the upper hand in his encounter with Jogo, a cursed spirit that has yet to establish a proper means of communication. Not only are cursed spirits growing stronger, but Gojo also recognizes the rising caliber of the sorcerers themselves.

Students like Yuta, Hakari, and Todo are now making their marks, unlike the time when Gojo seemed to be the only formidable sorcerer. Given the opportunity, he understands that these students might achieve things he could not. Additionally, Gojo is aware of Sukuna’s emergence, a cursed spirit that has been dormant for over a thousand years.
Considering all these factors, he claims that when the new era arrives, he will not be held back by the limitations of the special grades. The wave of power that these sorcerers are currently cultivating is remarkable, but what does that mean for the current state of Jujutsu sorcerers? Gojo’s strength may overshadow new sorcerers like Higuruma and Takaba.
Ultimately, they are not your typical sorcerers, as they are imbued with a unique essence that can rival Kenjaku’s plans. Both demonstrate significant progress within just a few months, and if they train diligently, they could reach the peak of the Jujutsu realm. However, despite their potential, they still fall short compared to Gojo. This disparity becomes further evident with Gojo’s students.
Therefore, Gojo’s strength has not been overvalued in Jujutsu Kaisen. Even though Gojo believes Sukuna doesn’t require the full strength of Megumi to defeat him, the reality remains that the stakes are considerably high when it comes to how Gojo can maneuver through Sukuna’s limitless abilities without Mahoraga’s potential.
The narrative has established Gojo’s supremacy for a reason. He has set a standard that other sorcerers have yet to meet. The possibility of Gojo falling to Sukuna seems improbable, and despite the affection fans may have for Gojo, he is not the central figure of the story. Thus, Gojo’s defeat at the hands of Sukuna is unlikely to occur anytime soon.
