Despite the fact that Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow, can be considered a box office hit with impressive revenue, the sequel is still unable to recreate the excitement that the iconic Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993, brought to audiences.
As a result, the next installment, titled Jurassic World 2, has been entrusted to J.A. Bayona (known for directing A Monster Calls) with the hope of creating a fresh and different atmosphere that will rekindle the audience’s enthusiasm for the dinosaurs on the big screen.
According to director Bayona, Jurassic World 2 will be a much darker film compared to its predecessor. Information shared by the director during a recent interview indicates that the dark tone of Jurassic World 2 will be compared to other prominent series such as Star Wars or Star Trek:
“It will be darker, definitely more intense than the previous installment. Clearly, when Chris Pratt appears, the film will bring a lighter mood. But it will still be very somber. This is the next step we are taking with three films, and this second part will carry a very dark tone, similar to The Empire Strikes Back or Wrath of Khan. The film will deliver a story that audiences have never experienced before. It genuinely surprised me. And we will take the entire storyline to a completely new place while still retaining the most valuable elements of this series. There will be changes that may shock everyone.”
In a recent interview, screenwriter and producer Colin Trevorrow revealed that the second part will have a slight connection to the theme of reversing extinction, regarding how we deal with the dinosaurs that are now facing extinction. The film will attempt to explore aspects that have never been presented on screen before and will have many ideas to realize a darker and more intense version of Jurassic World.
With the insights shared by the director and the screenwriters of Jurassic World, it can be seen that Jurassic World 2 is also heading in the direction of Hollywood blockbusters, aiming for a darker, intense atmosphere, creating a deep and realistic tone for the film. However, this direction might sometimes face challenges when the film is rated for restricted audiences and may alienate some younger viewers.
The release date for Jurassic World 2 is set for June 22, 2018.
