On October 8th, the Trang Hạ Literary House held a discussion titled “Everyone has something they want to say,” unveiling the works of Jimmy Liao.
Jimmy Liao is a renowned author from Taiwan, celebrated as a pioneering figure in the illustrated book movement for adults. In 2003, Studio Voice magazine recognized him as one of the 55 most creative individuals in Asia. By 2007, Discovery Channel described him as one of the six most influential figures in Taiwan.
Jimmy Liao has created a unique literary world characterized by vivid colors, poignant language, and a sense of freedom that resonates deeply. His work reflects the contemporary experience of individuals today.
Regarding the journey of bringing Jimmy Liao’s works to Vietnamese readers, Trang Hạ shared: “Fourteen years ago, I encountered Jimmy Liao’s book in Cao Hung. I knew that he would become a beloved figure in Vietnam due to his exceptional creativity, as we lack such imaginative works.”
The “Nàng rễ trái, chàng rễ phải” (The Left Bride, The Right Groom) has been circulating for several months since 2004, but it has faced challenges in being classified, resulting from high printing costs and insufficient market demand. To this day, the book is set to be published by Kim Đồng Publishing House.
Speaking on the development of the publishing industry, Mr. Chánh Văn Đoàn Công Lê Huy mentioned that over the past ten years, society has undergone various changes, which are yet to be fully represented in the literature. Some of these transformations require a visual representation.
How individuals navigate the challenges of life, changing circumstances, and their emotional states are embodied in the works of Jimmy Liao. The conversations reflect the evolving nature of the publishing industry and society at large.
Discussing love, Mr. Chánh Văn shared: “In life, we encounter many situations that require negotiation. A young man or woman carries numerous philosophies. Love is not just an initial emotion; it needs nurturing and building for it to be sustainable.”
In addition, Kim Đồng Publishing House introduced several iconic illustrated books for adults by Jimmy Liao: “Nàng rễ trái, chàng rễ phải,” “Hòn đá xanh,” “Âm thanh của sắc màu,” “Ôi, tình yêu,” and “Nụ hôn từ biệt.” Among these, “Ôi, tình yêu” and “Nụ hôn từ biệt” are the latest works introduced to Vietnamese readers.
Simultaneously, the event also launched the “Samurai Age” book series by author Chris Bradford. Kim Đồng Publishing House organized a program titled “Samurai Age – Initiating Deep Cultural Insights of Japan,” featuring discussions with translator Hoàng Hương Trang and specialists in Japanese literature and culture to delve deeper into the book series. This event is part of the ongoing activities at the Thăng Long Royal Citadel (Hanoi).
