The image of a nun with a wide, haunting smile and a vacant gaze has left an indelible mark on viewers, creating a lasting impression that both intrigues and terrifies. The popularity of this character has sparked significant discussion, particularly regarding the unique elements of the film “The Nun” and how this sequel might “break new ground” compared to the first installment.
The Origins of the Universe in The Conjuring Franchise

While it isn’t the first film in “The Conjuring” universe, “The Nun” serves as a pivotal entry that explores the timeline leading up to current events, particularly focusing on the year 1952 in Romania. The story unfolds as a convent encounters supernatural phenomena. A priest from the Vatican, Father Burke, and a novice named Sister Irene investigate the unsettling occurrences at this convent. They soon confront a malevolent spirit manifesting as a nun. Throughout their harrowing journey, the characters are relentlessly pursued by this demonic entity, putting Sister Irene’s faith to the ultimate test.
Fortunately, Sister Irene ultimately triumphs over the demon Valak, temporarily restoring peace to the Romanian region. However, the climax of “The Nun” reveals that Valak is not completely vanquished. Jumping forward to 1971, we see the character Frenchie becoming a key figure tied to the Warrens. Valak, in a quest for revenge, reclaims its hold over Frenchie, leading to the release of “The Nun 2” in 2023, setting the stage for an intense confrontation between Valak and Lorraine Warren in “The Conjuring 2.”

Valak’s Return: A More Menacing Presence
In 2023, “The Nun 2” introduces several fresh elements and character developments, focusing on the evolving dynamics between characters. The film retains pivotal characters such as Valak, Sister Irene (played by Taissa Farmiga), and the character Frenchie, now known as Maurice. Father Burke’s absence is felt as Sister Irene takes more responsibility for confronting the evil entity.
This shift is evident in Sister Irene’s character arc in “The Nun 2,” which showcases her darker transformation compared to her previous self. The film’s setting also shifts from Romania to France, moving away from the convent’s confines to a broader narrative. While the first film depicted Sister Irene as a novice grappling with Valak’s terror, the sequel portrays her as a seasoned warrior against the darkness.

The Nun 2: A New Chapter in the Ongoing Saga
Released in 2018, “The Nun” became a global sensation, achieving remarkable box office success with earnings of approximately $365.6 million worldwide, despite a production budget of only $22 million. The film’s profitability positioned it as one of the most lucrative entries in “The Conjuring” franchise. According to Deadline, “The Nun” generated a net profit of $155 million for Warner Bros. after accounting for all expenses.
In Vietnam, “The Nun” broke records on its opening day, grossing an impressive 13.5 billion VND. After three days, the film crossed the 46 billion VND mark, prompting theaters to add more screenings to meet demand. Given this success, “The Nun 2” is highly anticipated, with many critics predicting it will replicate the first film’s box office achievements.

“THE NUN II – THE DEMONIC NUN II” is scheduled to premiere on September 8, 2023, in Vietnam.
