With a treasure trove of thousands of iconic characters (in this article, I am generally referring to superhero movies), Marvel and DC Comics are like living legends on the golden screen, constantly mining their rich lore. However, the films that have made it to the big screen only represent a tiny fraction of their extensive libraries. Currently, Marvel has around 3-4 new films each year, and DC Comics is similarly limited, so both of these comic book giants, like Hollywood film studios, must carefully plan their production schedules years in advance. Let’s take a look at the list of films that are set to hit theaters from now until 2020.
As we move past the halfway point of 2016, we’ve already seen Deadpool, BvS, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Captain America: Civil War. By the end of this year, there are only two films left to be released: Doctor Strange from Marvel and Suicide Squad from DC Comics.
Suicide Squad: August 5, 2016
This film features a group of antiheroes, including some of the most dangerous and notorious villains in the DC Comics universe. The government assembles them to carry out missions that no organization would dare to take on.
Suicide Squad
Doctor Strange: November 4, 2016
Dr. Stephen Strange is a talented surgeon who loses his ability to operate after a tragic car accident. Seeking healing, he travels to the East to find the Ancient One, where he discovers an extraordinary power within himself. With the current changes in the world, along with the guidance of the Ancient One, Stephen Strange is set to become the new protector of humanity.
Doctor Strange
Gambit: Late 2016
In addition to the two movies mentioned above, 20th Century Fox is also in the process of producing another X-Men film featuring Gambit, a member of the X-Men known for his card-throwing abilities. However, there has been no confirmation from Fox regarding the Gambit film, leaving us uncertain about its future. If it does happen, Gambit will be directed by Doug Liman and is scheduled for release on October 7, 2016.
2017:
Marvel superhero films: X-Men: Wolverine, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and one unnamed film from 20th Century Fox.
DC Comics superhero films: Wonder Woman, Justice League.
X-Men: Wolverine 3 – March 3, 2017 will be the final film for Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold and is set to release on March 3, 2017. Currently, there are no additional details about the film’s plot.
Guardians of The Galaxy 2: May 5, 2017
This is the sequel to the first Guardians of The Galaxy film, which was released in August 2014. The film will continue the adventures of Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket as they travel across the galaxy. It is set to premiere on May 5, 2017.
