In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, star Tom Holland revealed that he has signed a long-term contract for six films with Marvel Studios.
Among these, there are three standalone films featuring Spider-Man: Homecoming and three other projects where the character will appear alongside other superheroes, such as Captain America: Civil War (2016) this summer.
Tom Holland will appear at least six times as Spider-Man in the future, including in Captain America: Civil War.
“They gave me a lot of choices. There will definitely be three standalone films about Spider-Man and three other films where the character appears alongside other superheroes. These could just be cameo roles and the storylines will depend on the script,” the 20-year-old actor stated.
Holland expressed his gratitude towards Marvel Studios for honoring his career. “The studio understands that I have many other commitments, and they are trying to schedule things in a way that works best for everyone,” the actor mentioned.
It appears that Marvel Studios, along with Sony, is set to produce three new films specifically about Spider-Man, starting with Homecoming (2017) in the near future.
At this point, Peter Parker is still just a high school student receiving guidance from his mentor, Tony Stark. The relationship between Spider-Man and Iron Man began in Civil War and is expected to be further explored in Homecoming.
Simultaneously, in another interview with Toronto Sun, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the Vulture would be the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
He also officially announced that actor Michael Keaton would portray the character. In the past, Keaton famously played the superhero Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film of the same name.
In 2014, at the age of 65, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in the critically acclaimed film Birdman. This year, he returns in the feature film The Founder, portraying Ray Kroc, the man behind the success of the fast-food chain McDonald’s.
According to the schedule, Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to release globally in early July 2017.
