Oricon recently announced the sales figures for Japanese manga from August 5 to September 1, revealing some surprising results. My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi has far outpaced other manga, selling a staggering 678,672 printed copies. This marks an impressive 68% increase compared to the previous month’s sales.
Following closely is the popular sports manga Blue Lock by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yuusuke Nomura, which saw an astonishing 110% increase in sales, totaling 346,039 copies sold, despite still being lower than previous volumes.

The manga Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami experienced a significant drop in sales, ranking third with 246,550 copies sold, a decrease of 78%. This decline is notable, as the series had previously reached its highest sales figures in recent times.
One Piece’s position on this list is equally striking. Despite being in one of the best arcs of its long-running narrative, creator Eiichiro Oda has faced a substantial drop in sales, with only 186,113 copies sold for the latest volume, reflecting a dramatic downturn in demand.
While beloved series like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen have faced significant sales declines, some other titles have made remarkable comebacks, such as Chainsaw Man, which returned to the top 10 with 190,822 copies sold. Works like Katainaka no Ossan, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Sakamoto Days have also seen similar performances in this competitive market.

Meanwhile, My Hero Academia continues to dominate the manga sales rankings, with Volume 41 selling 339,959 copies, significantly higher than the 105,227 copies of Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 27 and 89,991 copies of One Piece Volume 109.

One reason for the robust sales of My Hero Academia could be attributed to the conclusion of its manga series in August. Jujutsu Kaisen is also expected to follow a similar trajectory, with its series set to conclude on September 30, 2024. Therefore, the sales of Jujutsu Kaisen may see an increase leading up to its finale.
As for One Piece, fans are eagerly anticipating what lies ahead in the coming months, especially with the manga finally entering the highly-anticipated Elbaf arc.
