2024 continues to be a booming year for Japanese anime. Just at the beginning of the year, many superb titles have been released, setting numerous records in terms of box office revenue. Following Spy x Family Code: White and Solo Leveling, Haikyuu!!: Battle of the Garbage Dump (Vietnamese title: Haikyuu!! Trận Chiến Bãi Phế Liệu) is the next anime product that is expected to create significant buzz upon its release.
Officially released on February 16 in Japanese theaters, Haikyuu!!: Battle of the Garbage Dump grossed a staggering 890 million yen (over 145 million USD) within just one day. This achievement places the film 4th on the all-time highest-grossing Japanese film list for opening day, following Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (1.269 billion yen), One Piece Film: Red (1.232 billion yen), and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (1.072 billion yen).
Haikyuu!! (translated as High School Volleyball) is a popular manga and anime series focused on the sports genre, particularly volleyball. The main character of Haikyuu!! is Hinata Shoyo, a second-year student with a burning passion for volleyball despite his short stature and lack of experience. His dream is to become a volleyball star, inspired by the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” of Karasuno High School. To pursue this dream, Hinata joins the volleyball team at his school and works tirelessly to improve, aiming to “conquer” the volleyball court.
Hinata’s journey to become a volleyball player has inspired fans worldwide. The Haikyuu!! series has been published since 2012 and has sold over 60 million copies, consistently ranking among the best-selling manga of all time. This brand has “captivated” audiences, particularly with its charming male characters like Hinata, his team at Karasuno, and the skilled setter Sugawara. “Every square meter features a handsome guy” is a well-known phrase about the series, perfectly capturing the essence of the anime, which often showcases intense volleyball matches.
The anime adaptations of Haikyuu!! have also received immense love and high ratings from audiences. Battle of the Garbage Dump is one of the two films that closes the storyline, based on the final 110 chapters of the manga. Currently, fans are eagerly awaiting the “English-dubbed” version of the film.
