Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has finally revealed one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Zoro and his relationship with the samurai of Wano Country. In chapter #105 of the “SBS” (Shitsumon o Boshū Suru?, or “I’m Taking Questions”), Oda confirmed that Zoro is indeed a descendant of the Shimotsuki clan from Wano. This connection marks a significant revelation regarding the origins of the swordsman.

The legendary Shimotsuki Kouzaburo, who crafted the Enma sword for Oden, left Wano 55 years before the current events in the story. Among the samurai who left Wano was Shimotsuki Furiko, who later married Roronoa Pinzoro. This union gave rise to Roronoa Arashi, Zoro’s father.

Previously, fans often speculated about the possible connections between Zoro and various samurai from Wano. These speculations have gained momentum following Yamato’s flashback, which highlighted similarities between Shimotsuki Ushimaru and Zoro. There was also a flashback showing Kouzaburo living in Zoro’s hometown and gifting him his first sword.
However, Oda has confirmed that although there is a background story about Zoro’s ancestry, he will not delve into it in the manga. While Wano is known for being one of the most compelling arcs in One Piece, it has left fans feeling disappointed due to the lack of exploration of the mysteries surrounding Zoro’s relationship with Ushimaru and Ryuma, a legendary samurai known as the “God of Swords.”

Zoro’s first encounter with Ryuma, or more accurately, the zombie version of Ryuma, occurred at Thriller Bark. After being defeated, the zombie Ryuma handed Zoro his sword, Shusui. Later, Hiyori entrusted Zoro with Shusui to return it to Wano. Subsequently, she offered Zoro another sword, which was the legendary blade Enma, given to her by her father. Enma is a mythical sword that has caused significant damage to Kaido.
Furthermore, Oda’s latest revelations have made the connections surrounding Zoro more intriguing. Zoro not only has ties with Ushimaru and Ryuma but also with Kuina, his childhood friend and rival, who inspired him to become the strongest swordsman in the world.
Oda’s decision to reveal Zoro’s ancestral ties adds depth to his character. One Piece is currently in its final arc, bringing together various characters and numerous intertwined storylines. Considering Zoro’s personality and the circumstances of his father’s departure when he was young, it is likely that he is unaware of his family’s lineage.
However, this situation presents an opportunity for growth in Zoro’s character arc. He is known for his legendary swordsmanship and his quest to free his homeland from Kaido’s oppression, fulfilling his destiny as the heir of the Shimotsuki clan.
