A question from a curious fan goes like this: “Hello, Oda-sensei! In chapter 1058, Crocodile referred to Mihawk as ‘the hunter of hunters.’ Doesn’t this have to do with why Mihawk joined the Shichibukai?”
Oda responded: “Mihawk has had a complicated relationship with the Marines throughout the past and has always been wary of them. In a sense, he is similar to Crocodile, as he doesn’t easily trust others. Part of him views the title and life as a member of the Shichibukai as a means of safeguarding himself. By becoming a Shichibukai, he wouldn’t be pursued by the Marines, at least that’s my assumption. However, in the current context, the situation has changed, so this idea may be a mere speculation… depending on Buggy’s influence, I guess.”
What is Cross Guild?
Cross Guild is a new organization in the One Piece world, formed from the previous Shichibukai, including Buggy, Crocodile, and Dracule Mihawk. They are connected to each other to create a strategy against the World Government, operating like a military unit with the goal of disturbing the current system by rewarding pirates for hunting Marines. The idea is to reverse the balance of power, especially as the Marines are now more cautious, knowing that anyone can pursue them to claim the bounty set by Cross Guild on their heads.
This organization has a reward system based on stars and territories, assigning high values to Marine officers based on their location and reputation. For example, Koby, known for his nickname “Hero,” received a 5-star rating, while Garp, despite being a vice admiral, only received 3 stars due to his legendary status.
Although Buggy is recognized as the leader, in reality, he plays a decorative role, avoiding the actual responsibilities of the operations, leaving that to Mihawk and Crocodile. They are the true masterminds behind the scenes, overseeing the activities of Cross Guild while maintaining Buggy’s image as a figurehead to secure their identity and keep the organization operating in the shadows.
