One Piece is currently in the Elbaf arc, and with the latest chapters, the story is drawing closer to its conclusion. Fans are particularly eager to uncover the many secrets surrounding this arc, especially as Oda is set to reveal significant hidden truths about the world. However, there are some mysteries that fans are more curious about than others. One such mystery concerns the main character of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, and his family background.
As fans know, Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, a notorious figure known as the “World’s Most Wanted Criminal.” However, very little is known about his mother. To date, Oda has revealed some details about Luffy’s mother, sparking numerous theories among fans.
Oda’s Plans for Luffy’s Mother
When it comes to Luffy’s family, fans know very little. After the Enies Lobby events, fans discovered that Luffy has a father. Garp confirmed that Dragon is Luffy’s father, but did not mention anything about Luffy’s mother. Consequently, fans have been speculating extensively about who she is and what role she plays, a topic that Oda has been asked about for a long time.

Here’s what Oda has said about Luffy’s mother during an interview:
Q: What is Luffy’s mother like? Is she beautiful? What happened between them? Does she have a face when Luffy was still a child?
Oda: I think she is still alive. I am still thinking a lot about this matter. [End]
If she appears in the story, she will be a very strong female character. And serious. No way would she be just a beautiful woman. She has curly hair, resembling a strong female character.
There are two possibilities to consider here. The first possibility is that Oda wants to introduce Luffy’s mother into the story at a later point and keep her details under wraps for a while. This is a highly likely scenario, especially since the past interactions between Dragon and Luffy have yet to be revealed in the story. Given the importance of Luffy’s development and Dragon’s absence, it’s clear that when these two characters meet, Oda will unveil significant details. At that point, he will continue to reveal the truth about Luffy’s mother.
The second possibility is that Oda has already revealed Luffy’s mother, and that person is Dadan. Oda may not have explicitly mentioned Luffy’s biological mother in a traditional sense. After all, he has previously stated that blood relations are not the only important connections in One Piece.
Here’s what Oda said regarding blood relations during the SBS:
“Speaking of family, I have mentioned a story about Nico Robin and her family. In fact, it was the first time I introduced a mother in a character’s backstory. Until now, I have never mentioned a character who has a blood relation as a mother. In a situation where you call someone a mother who does not have a blood relationship, like in Chopper’s case, that person is referred to as a father even though that relationship does not exist. Therefore, I have included a message about the fact that you can call someone without a blood relationship your family.”
Could Luffy’s Mother Be a Revolutionary?

Another interesting theory is that Oda has hinted at Luffy’s mother being involved in revolutionary activities. This was notably highlighted through Oda’s comments in One Piece SBS, where he was asked about Luffy’s mother:
Q: “Oda-sensei!! I have a serious question. Do you have a plan for Luffy’s mother?” P.N. Mr. Uni, 16 years old.
O: “That mother question? I think you will be satisfied with the next chapter. Please look forward to it!”
Shortly after that, Oda revealed more about characters like Dragon and Dadan. However, there’s also the possibility that Oda may have hidden Luffy’s mother and has kept her presence discreet among the members of the Revolutionary Army. If this is indeed the case, the Final Saga will surely provide fans with answers to this question.
