To help the audience better understand the remake of the Power Rangers, the two leading actors, Becky G as the Yellow Ranger Trini and Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger Jason, held a brief interview sharing memorable moments during the film’s production.
Could you tell us a bit about how you both received these roles?
Becky – Yellow Ranger: When I got the call, I was traveling with my little brother and didn’t know much about the audition process. When I heard from my manager, they just sent a brief message, letting me know I was in and recorded it, then sent it to the studio. I was so excited that I didn’t even know what role I was auditioning for, so I almost turned it down… what a shame. However, my manager mentioned it, and I had to rush outside to find a quiet place to record it and send it back to her.
The next day, my manager called back and mentioned that “they” wanted to meet me after I returned from my trip. I was still confused and asked, “Who wants to meet me?” She was surprised and said, “The Power Rangers!” When I heard that, I was shocked, thinking “Power Rangers? Really??” Honestly, I was very surprised.
Dacre – Red Ranger: For me, it was different. I was in the final rehearsals for the third semester in Australia, and my manager sent a text asking, “Could you come to Los Angeles anytime soon?” I replied, “For what?” and he said, “To audition for Power Rangers.” I had to think, “Wait, is this real?”
The very next day, I had to book two flights on different airlines so I could fly to L.A and meet with the cast. You see, at that point, I had to drop everything, pause my studies, and devote my time to the filming process.
So, has the film moved on to the next stages yet?
Dacre: We’ve already finished filming everything. We had to focus on post-production for about four months, and now the footage is being processed for release. Currently, we are wrapping up with Bryan Cranston (who plays the main role in Breaking Bad).
Becky: The film is undergoing post-production, and they are currently working on the soundtrack, which I enjoy the most. The soundtrack has made me feel excited about the film, and I love the music choice.
Did you both have any prior knowledge about Power Rangers when you took on these roles?
Becky: I’ve known about it since elementary school. My family is very big; I have 19 siblings, and we often played together. Back then, we fought a lot over who would get to play which superhero, and I was very fond of the Yellow Ranger.
Dacre: For me, I was a huge fan of superheroes, from Spider-Man to Batman, and of course, Power Rangers. Taking on this role makes me feel an immense responsibility. I have a younger sister who is 12 years old, and it feels like being that older brother looking out for her.
Can you tell us a bit more about your characters?
Becky: Yes, my character Trini is a very quirky and rebellious girl who is on a journey of self-discovery. The idea is that she does not fully understand her identity and has to cope with her responsibilities.
Dacre: For me, Jason is quite different. In the film, he is a strong leader, often in the spotlight, surrounded by girls… I, on the other hand, am not an athlete and have always been the kid in the background. I had to sit with Dean, the director, a lot to connect and find common ground to play this role.
