Set against the enchanting backdrop of the southern United States, South of Midnight transports players on a journey to explore mystical tales and unique creatures. For those who enjoy narrative-driven adventure games, South of Midnight presents an enticing experience that is definitely worth the wait. However, the reality may not entirely match the expectations.
Unlike Traditional Adventure Games, South of Midnight Offers a Unique Chapter Structure
Each chapter allows players to navigate through distinct environments, solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and engage in battles to unlock a magical artifact. Once the artifact is complete, players can delve into a challenging realm where they can use it to unlock a critical passageway, open paths for a central battle, or find alternate solutions. The narrative kicks off when Hazel, the main character, bravely ventures into a storm and discovers that she is a “weaver” – someone with the ability to see and manipulate the threads of fate. With a fragile hope guiding her, Hazel embarks on this journey filled with challenges, where she encounters other characters who share their own unique burdens.
However, the unfortunate downside is that the gameplay mechanics of South of Midnight feel somewhat shallow. Aside from the ability to create artifacts from the threads of fate, many other mechanics seem to revolve around moving objects or interacting with designated spots. When engaging in battles, these mechanics change slightly but still lack engagement. Most battles occur in arenas surrounded by thorny walls. Throughout the journey, the gameplay consistently introduces new elements, but the overall diversity remains somewhat limited. The core of battle revolves around a series of basic attacks, a specific skill with a cooldown, and the ability to dodge enemy attacks if you time it right.
Even though the battles and gameplay mechanics may not be fully developed, South of Midnight still possesses many commendable qualities. First and foremost, the beautifully crafted environments, along with the artistically designed characters, deserve special mention. Moreover, the emotionally rich narrative of Hazel and the supporting characters throughout her journey is the primary reason why this game is worth experiencing.
