The recently released series on Netflix at the beginning of April has captivated audiences and received rave reviews for its innovative portrayal of the lives of Asian immigrants in the United States. The show intricately depicts cultural nuances, traditions, and perspectives of various Asian groups arriving in America, a detail often overlooked in Hollywood productions.
As of episode 8, the series has not yet waned in popularity, especially with the appearance of actress Hồng Đào in the role of Hanh Trinh Lau – the main character. Vietnamese viewers were particularly delighted to see a bowl of sour soup served alongside refreshing iced tea on the dining table.

Through a culinary lens, viewers can recognize the familiar sour soup showcased in a way that highlights its unique flavors, such as fish and herbs. Additionally, the character portrayed by Hồng Đào enjoying delicious iced tea adds to the authenticity of the film. The production team has clearly conducted thorough research to ensure cultural accuracy.

Sharing on her personal page, actress Hồng Đào revealed that the Beef team had taken her opinion about the sour soup dish into account during filming.
The actress also shared that while working with the director, she was pleasantly surprised to hear a voice behind her speaking Vietnamese: “Hello!”. It turned out to be Ali Wong, the show’s lead actress. The two quickly bonded, chatting and discovering essential connections to immerse themselves in their roles as mother and child.
Ali Wong’s ability to speak Vietnamese stems from her Vietnamese heritage; her family immigrated to the United States in the 1960s. She often accompanied her mother to film screenings during her childhood, cultivating her passion for acting.
Currently, Ali Wong is one of the most prominent stand-up comedians in the U.S., known for her specials Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife.
Following the success of Everything Everywhere All At Once, Beef is currently the most talked-about show on Netflix, bringing Asian culture to the forefront and highlighting the potential for Hollywood filmmakers to explore rich narratives from Asian storytellers. This moment also provides opportunities for actors and filmmakers from Asia to shine on the global stage.
Notably, with the increasing representation of Vietnam in Hollywood, Netflix is set to release A Tourist’s Guide To Love, a comedy that captures the essence of Vietnam’s scenery. Through the film’s trailer, audiences can anticipate iconic locations such as the Thu Bồn River in Hội An, Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary, and the Bến Thành Market. The film features the talents of actress Rachael Leigh Cook, alongside Scott Ly, and will officially premiere on April 21st.
