Before Disney released the DVD and Blu-ray versions of Captain America: Civil War, The Huffington Post conducted a brief interview with the two directors about the film’s ending.
“I think the act of Steve Rogers dropping the shield is symbolic of him no longer being the superhero he once was. It’s akin to a soldier recognizing that the Captain America persona has become too entangled with the choices he has made,” Joe Russo expressed.
Steve Rogers drops the shield, symbolizing the conclusion of Civil War, as he is no longer Captain America.
The public is aware that Chris Evans will continue to play Steve Rogers in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely previously shared that Captain America does not bear the mantle in Civil War, similar to the comic book’s principle that “the Avengers still need him.”
“There is a certain point where Steve will be very useful in that battle,” Markus said. The purple-skinned character hinted at here is Thanos, the supervillain previously referred to as “that guy from the Avengers” since the team’s formation in The Avengers (2012).
Along with Joe Russo’s new revelations, the directors hinted that Steve Rogers will continue to fight alongside the Avengers but under a new identity. He may take on the persona of Nomad, as in the comic books when the hero from the United States no longer trusts the government.
In addition to discussing Captain America’s arc, Joe and Anthony Russo also dropped some details for fans surrounding Civil War.
When asked about the potential appearance of Uncle Ben in Peter Parker’s life, Joe Russo encouraged fans to stay tuned for the Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) film to see if the character exists in the Marvel superhero universe.
There has been speculation around the character of the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) not being related to any of the key elements used to “activate” the Winter Soldier program. This remains a significant plot point in the creative process.
Ultimately, Anthony Russo revealed that Captain America had known beforehand that the Winter Soldier was responsible for the assassination of Howard Stark – Tony Stark’s father (Robert Downey Jr.). This detail was previously hidden in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), and Steve Rogers was completely aware of the implications.
