The official release of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has hit theaters worldwide, including Vietnam, and has quickly amassed an impressive box office revenue of $368 million USD. This astounding figure not only secures the film’s position as the number one in global box office revenue but also marks it as the highest-grossing animated film debut in history.
In the North American market, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” generated $137 million USD over its opening weekend and accumulated $195 million USD in its first five days since its release on April 5, 2023. On an international scale, the film brought in $173 million USD in its initial weekend.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has surpassed the $358 million USD earnings of “Frozen 2” to claim the title of the highest-grossing animated film opening of all time. Additionally, it has become the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far, breaking past the $225.3 million USD record set by the superhero blockbuster “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
In North America, the film, distributed by Universal Pictures, did not surpass the $180 million USD debut of “Incredibles 2” but did exceed the $135.1 million USD earnings of “Finding Dory” to secure the second position in animated film openings.
Globally, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” achieved the largest opening for an Illumination animated film, surpassing the $208 million USD of “Despicable Me 2.” Based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” video game series, it also set a record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation film, exceeding the $210 million USD of “Warcraft.” Moreover, it quickly became the fourth-highest opening film in Universal’s history, following “Fast & Furious 8” ($543 million USD), “Jurassic World” ($525 million USD), and “Fast & Furious 7” ($398 million USD).

In the North American market, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” clearly dominated the box office this past weekend, with “John Wick: Chapter 4” trailing behind at the second position, earning $14.6 million USD in its third week in theaters. This revenue is impressive but pales in comparison to the earnings that Mario brought in.
Additionally, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ranked third with $14.5 million USD, while “Air” came in fourth with $14.46 million USD, and “Scream VI” settled for fifth with $3.31 million USD after a month in theaters.
