At the Summer Game Fest 2025, the gaming community was surprised when the official developer announced a new title named Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
This game is the first real-time strategy (RTS) game that allows players to directly experience the fierce battles for control over the blood-soaked territories of Westeros, with a planned release in 2026 on PC.

The first trailer of War for Westeros showcased at the Summer Game Fest caused a stir by presenting previously unseen “behind-the-scenes” details.
In this cinematic trailer, Jon Snow confronts the Night King, but eventually becomes part of a battle that involves the living and the dead, transforming the fight into a grim reality that leaves the entire realm trembling. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen, leading her army into battle against the Lannister forces, is unexpectedly caught in a fierce trap, causing her to struggle on the battlefield. Simultaneously, Jaime Lannister only commands the troops of Queen Cersei, creating a chaotic three-sided battle that markedly differs from the original narrative in the novels or HBO’s acclaimed series.

The standout feature of War for Westeros is its RTS format, where players can control various territories, build armies, manage resources, and engage in real-time battles. Although the official gameplay has not yet been revealed, the strategic foundation suggests a deep tactical gameplay experience – from capturing territories to manipulating political affairs within the realm. One of the intriguing mechanics allows players to change the course of events in Westeros. You may choose to lead Jon Snow towards darkness, enabling Daenerys to achieve total victory, or even allow House Stark to reclaim the Iron Throne without forming alliances – a scenario that fans have yet to see in either the show or the books.

The Game of Thrones franchise has previously made several attempts to break into the gaming industry, but most have failed to make a significant impact. The most recent was Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, a role-playing game that suffered due to its monetization model and shallow content, particularly aimed at mobile gamers despite being launched on PC. Scheduled for release in 2026, War for Westeros aims to deliver a compelling experience that could be one of the standout strategy games of the year.
