The main reason cited was the team’s reliance on old habits that the current IG players have developed.
“Even though the new IG roster has many fans, I believe they will face numerous difficulties. The positions of TheShy and Rookie tend to seek pressure on the opponents, which requires support and sacrifices from the backline. However, Jiejie and Meiko seem to play rather ‘selfishly,’ focusing on increasing their own benefits, making it challenging to cooperate effectively. Moreover, the new IG members are performing well but still need time to adapt. Additionally, when facing strong opponents, IG struggles to exploit advantageous situations and often plays cautiously, leading to defeats,” Coach Poppy shared candidly.
IG Still Carrying the “Super Team Curse”
The observations made by Coach Poppy are entirely valid as IG recently faced a complete defeat against TES (a strong opponent) at the Demacia Cup 2024. During this match, both TheShy and Rookie frequently found themselves outmatched as the opponents exploited high-risk situations without adequate support. It is important to note that the Demacia Cup serves merely as a friendly competition, meaning IG might still face even greater challenges against TES as they advance into the LPL.
Beyond the hype surrounding the “Super Team” status, being labeled as a “new Super Team” in the LPL brings numerous challenges for IG in the upcoming season. The reason stems from the fact that many “Super Teams” have either struggled or faced disappointing outcomes in recent years. For instance, TES in the 2024 season was regarded as a “Super Team,” yet they fell short of expectations. Therefore, if IG wishes to break free from the “Super Team curse” and reclaim their former glory in the 2025 season, they will need to significantly improve their capabilities.
