In response to an interview with Thrillist, the son of the iconic singer David Bowie expressed, “I am absolutely proud of Warcraft. I love the lore and have spent a lot of time, as well as effort, to bring it to life.”
Based on the famous game franchise by Blizzard Entertainment, Warcraft premiered in early June. The film faced significant failure at the North American box office, earning just under $50 million compared to its production budget of up to $160 million.
However, in international markets, especially in China, the film did “rescue” the project. With overseas revenue reaching up to $386 million, the total global gross of Warcraft is $433 million, placing it among the top 10 highest-grossing films of the summer of 2016.
Duncan Jones acknowledged that he learned many lessons after the film’s release. He admitted, “Many people only criticize the narrative of Warcraft. Believe me, I’m not happy with what happened. I fully understand the changes that occurred.”
When the film concluded its release process in China, production units were ready to start planning for a sequel. Duncan Jones is hopeful as he believes that his film still holds many details that could be expanded for the next story set in the world of Azeroth.
“If another Warcraft film is realized, I believe that my work is a solid foundation for development. I have spent three years developing it and feel very pleased. If given the opportunity, I am ready to continue exploring this universe,” the British filmmaker stated.
Currently, Duncan Jones is working on a lower-budget science fiction project titled Mute. The film features the participation of “Tarzan’s green giant” Alexander Skarsgård and “Ant-Man” Paul Rudd.
