In recent years, the traditional comic creation movement in Vietnam has shown signs of resurgence, particularly with the emergence of several talented artists. Although it still cannot be compared to the international comics scene, especially Japanese manga in terms of content and professionalism, it is undeniable that these works created by Vietnamese artists are receiving considerable attention from the domestic audience.
Recently, an intriguing incident was reported in the comic community when a work by a Vietnamese artist was uploaded illegally on a website. Not only that, but the title of the work was also altered to that of a Korean artist, which caused a significant stir within the comic community.
The comic in question is titled “Blood – The Dark Le Loi,” created by artist Miriki Chi. According to the artist’s information, an online comic platform not only uploaded her work illegally but also credited it to Han Yu Rang (a distinctly Korean name).
If you are not familiar, “Blood – The Dark Le Loi” is a fantasy comic set in the 19th century featuring a French soldier who sacrifices himself on the battlefield and is later reincarnated as Li Le, a Vietnamese girl who possesses supernatural abilities. The story revolves around the struggles of this French soldier and the changes in the world 200 years after his death.
Although the comic industry is not yet highly regarded compared to contemporary Japanese manga, this incident has certainly sparked significant concern within the Vietnamese comic community. The unauthorized use of the artist’s name and the alteration of her work to that of a Korean artist is extremely disheartening and highlights the lack of respect for the creator’s rights.
This situation also underscores the challenges faced by contemporary Vietnamese comic artists, who not only focus on creating original works but also struggle to protect their intellectual property.
