The film series “A Quiet Place” unfolds in a world overrun by bloodthirsty alien creatures with the ability to hunt by sound. Both “A Quiet Place” and its sequel, “A Quiet Place Part II,” are critically acclaimed horror films that have garnered recognition from audiences and critics alike. The series has grossed over $600 million worldwide across two films and received several awards, including nominations for the Oscars.
The first two films focus on the survival of the Abbott family, featuring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt as Lee and Evelyn, who strive to protect their children, including their deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and son Marcus (Noah Jupe). Meanwhile, “A Quiet Place: Day One” diverges from the Abbott family storyline, bringing the narrative to New York City, exploring the events that unfold as the alien invasion begins.
The trailer opens on Day 472 after the “invasion” begins, showcasing the Abbott family (the central characters of the first two films) enjoying quiet moments at a dinner table, using sign language to communicate with each other. However, as the following days unfold, the family encounters terrifying surprises from familiar faces. The timeline then rewinds back to Day One, a day when enormous alien creatures descend upon the bustling streets of New York, transforming the city into a chaotic battleground. The chilling sounds of screams echo everywhere, and the massive, bloodthirsty monsters move swiftly, leaving destruction in their wake. Blood trails appear on walls, hospital staff run in panic, and military aircrafts scramble to respond. The city is engulfed in flames, smoke, and the destruction of buildings.
The story will also feature a central character played by Lupita Nyong’o (from “Us”), who portrays a woman with a speech impairment. She communicates through sign language, facing challenges that arise in a world where sound is deadly. After a devastating event, she creates a noise that attracts attention, and at that moment, a familiar face – the character known as “Man on Island” (Djimon Hounsou) – appears to assist her. This frightening character is seen once more in “A Quiet Place Part II,” where he leads a group of survivors on a deserted island outside the East Coast. This sequel continues to explore the unique aspect of the “A Quiet Place” series: focusing on characters with disabilities, showing how they navigate a dangerous world.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” features performances by Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou, who face off against the deadly extraterrestrial beings without any prior knowledge of how to survive, just like the Abbott family in previous films. Nyong’o recently appeared in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” as Nakia. Hounsou had a standout year in 2023, appearing in “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods,” “Gran Turismo,” and “Rebel Moon.” Alex Wolff is well known for his role in “Hereditary,” and he has become a familiar face in the horror genre through his recent films, including “Thoroughbreds,” “Pig,” and “Old” by M. Night Shyamalan.
The direction of “A Quiet Place: Day One” is handled by Michael Sarnoski, marking the first time a different director has taken the helm of the series aside from John Krasinski. The film is produced by Paramount Pictures, Platinum Dunes, and Sunday Night Productions. Krasinski remains involved as a producer alongside Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller.
“A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE” is set to premiere in June 2024.
