Tragedy Leads to Châu Nhân Phát’s Decision to Liquidate All Assets
Châu Nhân Phát, known as the “King of Hong Kong Cinema,” is recognized for his impressive stature and exceptional acting talent. After nearly 50 years in the film industry, he is now set to liquidate his extensive film assets, a move many actors wish to avoid.
Many of Phát’s films have become “legendary” in the cinematic world, including Heroic Bloodshed, The God of Gamblers, and Infernal Affairs. Additionally, the name of this talented man has echoed far beyond his roles in international productions like Kung Fu Panda and Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End.
In addition to his talent and fame, Châu Nhân Phát is also well-known for his charitable contributions, particularly his deep love for his late wife, Trần Hợi Liên. In 2018, the actor made headlines when he announced a charitable contribution amounting to over 714 million USD (about 17,000 VND) for humanitarian causes. This decision was made after the couple had been estranged for a time.
Regarding the reason for liquidating all his assets, Châu Nhân Phát shared: “The money I have cannot be given to my daughter, so I will leave it to those in need.” Few know that his daughter had been pregnant. However, she tragically passed away before she could even take her first breath.
Speaking of the painful memory of losing their child, Trần Hợi Liên was distraught: “One day in July during my pregnancy, I turned to my husband and asked why our daughter was so quiet today; she was no longer kicking. Then we both sadly realized that something was wrong. When we went to the hospital, the doctor told us that our daughter had passed away due to complications during birth. The day before, she had been active in my womb, and that turned out to be the day we separated forever.”
Her loss caused Châu Nhân Phát’s wife to go into a deep depression for an extended period. Afterward, Trần Hợi Liên did not want to have more children due to the trauma. As she suffered greatly, Châu Nhân Phát also withdrew. He felt that the two of them being together was enough and did not wish for anything else.
What is Life Like at Age 68?
Even though he is a leading star in the Hong Kong film industry, Châu Nhân Phát still lives a modest and simple life. The star of Infernal Affairs gives all his earnings to his wife, and each day he only takes a few hundred dollars (about 1 million VND) for his personal expenses.
Similar to her husband, Trần Hợi Liên also enjoys a simple, peaceful life. It’s not hard to catch them dining at local eateries, but they never spend excessively or buy extravagant clothes.
Châu Nhân Phát stated: “My happiness is to be a normal person and live peacefully. In life, the hardest thing is not how much money you can earn, but how to maintain a peaceful state of mind, even with a simple lifestyle and no excess.”
Currently, Phát has appeared in fewer films than before. Instead, he spends time pursuing photography, exploring traditional medicine, running, and hiking. The Hong Kong star began to enjoy jogging and physical fitness after filming Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons in 2014. For nearly a decade, he has maintained high levels of physical activity.
Recently, Châu Nhân Phát frequently participates in promotional activities for films he has starred in, marking his return to the film industry after a five-year hiatus. To promote the film, the actor has traveled extensively in Hong Kong and Shanghai, meeting and interacting with fans.
However, recently, some Chinese media reported that Châu Nhân Phát had suffered a setback, which caused fans to worry. According to reports, on July 4, Phát contracted COVID-19 while filming and interacting with fans on set. His condition worsened a few days later, leading to hospitalization.
Nonetheless, updates on his health have yet to be confirmed. Additionally, there are unverified reports that Châu Nhân Phát has recovered and is no longer in critical condition. On July 16, he also participated in an event to interact with fans, appearing healthy and strong.
