Prior to that, Dragon Ball Z had introduced another fusion technique known as Fusion Dance, but it required two individuals to have equal strength and to perform a specific dance in sync. Thus, the resulting warrior would possess power significantly stronger than each of the original fighters.
From the story’s context, we understand that the Potara earrings possess the ability to fuse two beings together, provided both wear one of each earring. This method is both quick and powerful, with the only requirement being that both parties must wear the earrings of Kaioshin. When fused using the Potara earrings, the new warrior created does not need to have similar power levels; anyone can fuse.

Akira Toriyama once confessed that the Potara earrings were initially intended as mere accessories. However, at a significant turning point in the story’s development, he felt the need for a new technique. When he saw the earrings being worn by Kaioshin and Kibito, he decided to use them as a fusion method.
“I was wondering what to do. I always thought of earrings for Kaioshin, so I thought, ‘Maybe I can find a way to use them.’ Up until then, they were just ornaments,” Akira Toriyama admitted.
