Captain America: Civil War has created a significant stir in the global film industry, surpassing the blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron in terms of the quantity and quality of superheroes involved in the film. In order to achieve such an outstanding work, the Russo brothers had to make very careful selections of details to construct the depiction of superheroes in a compelling way that resonates emotionally with the audience.
According to the insights shared by the two directors, Spider-Man is one of the key characters that contributed to the film’s success. There was a time when they had to carefully consider adding a “suit” for Spider-Man or including Red Hulk in the film as part of the storyline related to the character Thunderbolt Ross.
“We had already incorporated many characters into the film. We had to be very cautious, as with so many characters, it would be difficult to add a new character like Red Hulk. If we included him, we would also have to provide some context to explain this character. In the end, we decided that Thunderbolt Ross would only appear as a government representative without any mention of Red Hulk, allowing more focus on other characters,” they explained.
It is quite understandable that the Russo brothers had to consider many factors when creating additional details for the film. Although this decision may disappoint some fans, it is evident that everyone wanted to see Hulk appear in Captain America: Civil War.
“We had established a central storyline while executing superhero films for Marvel, which included a list of characters that we could utilize for each film. After that, we spent up to eight months developing various story arcs with different characters so that they could be adapted and selectively chosen according to the storyline,” they remarked.
In connection with the buzz surrounding the younger version of Spider-Man, fans had speculated that the interaction between Spider-Man and Tony Stark might lead to the young superhero acquiring a new technological suit and transforming into Iron Spider-Man. However, similar to Red Hulk, this detail had initially been considered but was later removed from the main storyline to keep the plot tighter, resulting in the Russo brothers deciding to exclude it.
Following this revelation, many fans expressed their regret that if the Russo brothers had decided to include Red Hulk alongside Iron Spider-Man, it could have offered a very different version of Captain America: Civil War from what we have now. Not to mention the unique storyline that could arise from Spider-Man in his suit alongside Red Hulk, which has left many fans yearning for what could have been.
