One of the distinctive features of animated films produced by Studio Ghibli is their unique use of color palettes. Each film typically features a specific color scheme that is consistently utilized throughout the movie. The artist responsible for creating these artistic techniques for Studio Ghibli’s iconic anime is Michiyo Yasuda, who recently passed away at the age of 77.
Michiyo Yasuda was a designer known for her role in color selection for various works of Studio Ghibli, having participated in many notable projects throughout her career. She left a lasting legacy for anime enthusiasts in Japan.
Take a look at the images below showcasing the artistic touch of the works that she executed.
According to The Mainichi and Asahi News, Yasuda passed away on October 5 after battling a prolonged illness. She had retired in 2008 but returned in 2013 to create her final work, “The Wind Rises.”
In 2009, Yasuda spoke with The Los Angeles Times and shared, “When I start working on a film, I will choose colors for each character. This color does not necessarily have to carry any meaning; it just needs to be suitable for the character. For example, Ponyo’s dominant color is pink (with a hint of red) because she has many characteristics associated with goldfish. And in the scene where Ponyo runs on the waves, the colors of the fish and the ocean are very harmonious with each other.”
Yasuda and the films of Ghibli have left a significant impression on viewers through the captivating colors in every frame.
The passing of Yasuda has left fans in Japan mourning, as in the realm of animated filmmaking, it is rare to find someone who could harmoniously blend colors in such a beautiful and exquisite way. Alongside Miyazaki, Yasuda is also regarded as an icon of the anime industry in Japan.
We hope she rests in peace, and undoubtedly, her works and contributions will live on in the hearts of her audience.
