The magazine Josei Jishin recently conducted a survey targeting males aged 30 to 40 to evaluate the most disappointing endings of manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2014. This survey was particularly significant for the magazine, as it has recently lost a prominent position. The focus was on iconic series, including those that have significantly impacted society and marked a notable period in the history of manga.
On August 19, the YouTube channel of Weekly Shonen Jump announced that the popular manga “Jujutsu Kaisen” would conclude after its current arc. This announcement surprised many fans, as this title is one of the most successful series from the magazine, with over 90 million copies sold worldwide.
Jujutsu Kaisen has been a cornerstone of the magazine in recent years, and its conclusion marks the end of another significant chapter in the history of Shonen Jump.
Recently, several other notable series from Shonen Jump have also come to an end. On August 5, another flagship series, “Boku no Hero Academia,” concluded its publication following numerous critical arcs. Similarly, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” ended in May 2020, after becoming a cultural phenomenon, and “Haikyu!” wrapped up in July of the same year.
Amid this transition, Josei Jishin decided to gauge readers’ opinions on the endings of some of the most popular manga that have concluded since 2014. The magazine surveyed men in their 30s and 40s, a demographic that follows many of these series closely. The question posed was straightforward: “Which manga do you think had the most disappointing ending?”
The survey revealed the opinions of a group of readers who expressed their thoughts along with personal stories and emotions tied to their favorite series’ conclusions. With many series having a significant impact on the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, the survey also reflects nostalgia and feelings of disappointment among readers, particularly those who are currently engaged with the magazine.
