Recently, Disney has taken the audience by surprise with the announcement of a live-action adaptation of its classic animated films. Iconic characters like Ariel, Snow White, and Tinkerbell are set to undergo significant changes, sparking much debate among fans.
On April Fool’s Day, Disney received considerable praise for its casting choices, showcasing remarkable accuracy and excellence.
According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is currently planning to adapt the beloved animated series Lilo & Stitch into a live-action film, scheduled to premiere on streaming platforms. The studio has already cast a young actress, Maia Kealoha, in the lead role of Lilo.
This will be Maia Kealoha’s first major role in a film. Although not much information is available about her, Collider reports that this young actress, approximately 7 years old, comes from the Polynesian community. She previously participated in a beauty pageant and has a talent for Tahitian dance.
Though there are no specific details about her character’s portrayal, Kealoha has already been praised for fully embodying the role of Lilo. The film will be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who recently earned an Oscar nomination for the animated film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
Lilo & Stitch was released in 2002 and tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl, Lilo Pelekai, who struggles with her family dynamics. At the story’s outset, Lilo is often left to her own devices, having to deal with her stern older sister Nani. One fateful night, Lilo receives Stitch, an alien experiment, as her new pet, leading to a series of misadventures.
Stitch’s essence as a mischievous experiment leads to a tumultuous adventure. Upon arriving on Earth, Stitch meets Lilo and becomes her “dog.” From there, Lilo discovers that over 600 other experiments have fallen to Earth, and both she and Stitch must confront their pasts to protect their newfound family, emphasizing the meaning of “ohana” – family.
