Before becoming a beloved anti-hero, Dr. Harleen Quinzel (the real name of Harley Quinn) was once a dedicated psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum—the infamous home for Gotham’s most notorious criminals. During her time treating the Joker, she developed a deep emotional bond with this villain and ultimately helped him escape. Their relationship is incredibly complex; although the Joker often treats Harley poorly, she remains infatuated and deeply committed to him.
Harley’s tumultuous life prior to her transformation into an anti-hero has raised many questions. Let’s delve into the “behind-the-scenes” secrets of this notorious character who always stays close to the Joker through the following 8 surprising facts:
1. Harley Made Her First Appearance in a Series
This character was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, first appearing in episode 22 of the animated series Batman: The Animated Series in September 1992. Initially, the creators intended to have the Joker’s girlfriend appear in a scene, but later, Radomski and Timm revised the script and introduced her as a prominent character. No one could have guessed that Harley Quinn would soon become a fan-favorite character in the Batman universe.
2. Harley is Immune to Various Acids and Poisons
Harley Quinn is the best friend of Poison Ivy, a character known for her toxic powers and as an enemy of Batman. After hearing about Harley’s new love for the Joker, Poison Ivy decided to help her by injecting her with a special serum that granted Harley immunity to most toxins and made her even stronger. Along with Poison Ivy and Catwoman, Harley formed the notorious criminal trio known as the “Gotham City Sirens,” and she has also been part of various other villainous teams.
3. Harley Uses Various Weapons Effectively
Not only is Harley immune to toxins, but she also excels at using weapons, especially her iconic mallet, which she wields effectively in combat. Additionally, her baseball bat is one of her favorite weapons, showcasing her versatility and agility in battle. Harley is also known for her acrobatic skills, which make her a formidable opponent.
4. The Character’s Origin is Inspired by a Live-Action Actress
Creator Paul Dini revealed that the initial idea for Harley Quinn was based on the character played by Arleen Sorkin in the sitcom Days of Our Lives. Dini was so fond of Sorkin’s character that he later asked her to voice Harley Quinn in the animated series. To this day, Sorkin remains the definitive voice of Harley, and no other actress has captured her essence quite like Sorkin did.
5. Harley Has a Daughter with the Joker
In the comic series Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two, Harley reveals to Black Canary that she has a daughter with the Joker named Lucy, who is four years old. The Joker, however, is completely unaware of her existence and shows little concern for Harley. Harley, in turn, has kept this secret from him for nearly a year, and due to this, she has decided to raise Lucy alone.
6. Harley Was Introduced Long Before the Suicide Squad
Do you remember the film Batman & Robin directed by Joel Schumacher in 1997? Harley Quinn was initially set to appear as one of the main characters in the sequel titled Batman Unchained, with Courtney Love slated to play the role. However, due to the project being canceled, it wasn’t until 2016 that Harley Quinn made her first official live-action debut in the blockbuster Suicide Squad.
7. Harley Was Once an Amazon Warrior
In the comic series Countdown, Harley eventually escapes, distancing herself from the Joker and starting a new life. She joined the Secret Six, a group similar to the Suicide Squad, but later she left to live on an island inhabited only by Amazons.
8. There Are Many Different Versions of Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn has appeared in numerous animated films, live-action films, video games, and comics revolving around Batman. Additionally, her various adaptations and character designs throughout the years have always fascinated audiences, continuing to deliver a unique blend of “quirkiness” and charm.
