Recently, a Japanese diver with the X account name @monakoMNK shared a photo that has stirred up the online community. The image shows a robotic cat, Doraemon, lying motionless on the seabed in Enoura, west of Sagami Bay (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan). This picture immediately evokes memories of the animated film Doraemon: Nobita and the Tin Labyrinth, which premiered in 1993.
The story began when @monakoMNK went on a diving expedition to explore the underwater world. Instead of encountering beautiful schools of fish or stunning seashells, he stumbled upon something even more surprising: Doraemon, the beloved robotic cat that has brought joy to countless generations of Japanese children. However, unlike the lively and optimistic image usually associated with him, Doraemon in the photo appears extremely sad.
“I can’t forget this image,” @monakoMNK shared on X. “It’s as if Doraemon has been abandoned by Japanese society.”
In Doraemon: Nobita and the Tin Labyrinth, Doraemon is captured and tortured by an alien army with powerful electric shocks. These shocks damage Doraemon’s internal circuitry, and his body is thrown into the sea. However, fans can rest assured that Doraemon was later repaired and went on to star in 29 other films (and is still continuing).
Interestingly, @monakoMNK is not the only one to have found Doraemon at the bottom of the sea. Many others have shared similar experiences, including videos recorded as far back as 2015. These photos and videos have sparked numerous theories about the appearance of Doraemon on the ocean floor.
Some speculate that this is a prank, while others believe it could be a form of tribute to the co-creator of the legendary series, Fujiko A. Fujio, who passed away in early April 2022. Others humorously guess: “That would be my nightmare,” “I think if you swim past this at night, it will start chasing you,” “It’s scary to see the cat’s eyes have faded,” “Doraemon comes from the future, so I think he’s buried under the sea to prevent a time paradox,” “I think all these Doraemons originate from the same entity, but through the use of a time machine, timelines have begun to overlap, allowing them to exist simultaneously.”
No matter what the truth is, the image of Doraemon at the bottom of the sea continues to spark people’s imagination and serves as a reminder of the profound impact this futuristic robotic cat has had.
