One month after Tim Miller stepped away from directing the sequel to Deadpool, Fox has quickly begun the process of selecting a replacement. As previously reported, the director of Deadpool 2 will now be David Leitch, one of the co-directors of John Wick (2014).
Previously, fans were quite surprised when Tim Miller decided to part ways with Deadpool 2 as he had been closely involved in the development of the script for the film during the past year. Some sources suggest that disputes arose between him and Ryan Reynolds regarding the casting of actor Cable for the new character.
Since its debut in early 2016, Deadpool is currently the highest-grossing R-rated film in cinematic history, with a global box office of $782.6 million. Prior to this success, Fox had quickly given the “green light” for the sequel project.
At this time, aside from Tim Miller, other key figures behind the success of Deadpool such as Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are all set to return. According to the plan, Deadpool 2 is scheduled to hit theaters in early January 2018, so they need to quickly find a director for the project.
Currently, Fox is reported to have begun brainstorming ideas for both Deadpool 3 and a standalone film about the X-Force team. However, according to sources from Variety, the agreement between Fox and David Leitch only pertains to the second installment.
