While the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is currently captivating audiences worldwide, Disney has left fans astonished by confirming that a new animated version of The Little Mermaid is in production. This project is set to debut in 2024, showcasing a new interpretation of the beloved character Princess Ariel.
According to Variety, this animated version of The Little Mermaid is being produced and will air on Disney Junior, targeting a younger audience. This animated series is set in the time before the events of the live-action The Little Mermaid that was released in 2023, featuring a character design that resembles Halle Bailey.
The initial design of Ariel features short, curly hair and a tail color that aligns with Halle Bailey’s version. Alongside Ariel is her loyal friend Flounder, who retains the charm of the character from the 1989 animated film.
According to Disney’s details shared at the Annecy Animation Festival, the film is titled Ariel (or Disney Junior’s Ariel), focusing on Ariel’s adventures when she was young. This imaginative series will explore the adventurous life of the young mermaid, who collects unique treasures, such as shimmering pearls and rubber toys from shipwrecks under the sea. Disney also hinted that Ariel’s tail color may change according to her mood.
Currently, the live-action film The Little Mermaid is making significant strides at the box office. After three weeks of release, the film has already grossed over $417 million, projected to reach blockbuster status and generate profit for Disney. Previously, the film was estimated to have a production budget of around $400 million, which includes $250 million for production and $150 million for marketing.
