According to Variety, the iconic horror manga “Bloodsucking Darkness” by Junji Ito is set to be adapted into a live-action film in Hollywood. The film will be produced by the notable screenwriter Jeff Howard (known for the Resident Evil 2022 series and the production of The Haunting of Hill House), who will also serve as the executive producer.

Junji Ito himself will be involved with the project as a consultant, while Fangoria Studios, a company specializing in horror film production, will handle the film’s production.
Junji Ito shared his excitement about his work being adapted into a live-action film, stating:
“Fangoria Studios is adapting my manga! I’m very happy to see how it will come to life. I hope I can see a teaser soon tonight.”
“Bloodsucking Darkness” will be the first project in a series of three horror films being adapted from the Eisner Award-winning anthology titled “Smashed” by Junji Ito. Details about the other two adaptations have yet to be announced.
“Bloodsucking Darkness” is a short horror story featuring a central character who is struggling with weight loss after experiencing an unfortunate romantic relationship. Each night, she dreams of horrific nightmares related to her demise in a blood-soaked rain. Soon after, she encounters a young man and develops a romantic relationship with him…

Earlier this January, the anime series “Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre” debuted globally on Netflix. This horror anime consists of 12 episodes, made from 20 chapters of stories taken from Junji Ito’s manga, though it does not include the one-shot “Bloodsucking Darkness.”
Additionally, Junji Ito’s work “Uzumaki” is also being adapted into a mini-series anime, although its release has been delayed due to production issues.
