For a long time now, fans of Marvel’s superhero comics have been accustomed to seeing the iconic image of Iron Man as the wealthy and genius Tony Stark. However, in the near future, we will witness a significant change as the Iron Man mantle will be passed on to a… young woman with curly hair.
The character Riri Williams has previously been identified as the next War Machine, taking over from James Rhodes. However, the latest Marvel updates reveal that she may inherit the Iron Man title, donning a sleek suit of gold and black armor to become Iron Person (though calling her Iron Woman would be more fitting…).
This news was shared during a recent interview with Brian Michael Bendis in Times magazine, where it was also revealed that the upcoming Civil War II event in Marvel comics will lead to Tony Stark being sidelined for a significant period.
“We are currently in a very significant phase of the story regarding Tony Stark. At this time, his best friend has died, his company is on the verge of collapsing, and he is also looking to find out who he really is. This shows that Tony Stark is going through one of the most stressful periods of his life.”
“These complications have caused Tony Stark to distance himself from his duties within the Avengers, and he is also reluctant to put on the armor again. Ultimately, after the events of Civil War II, the Iron Man title will be handed over to the young woman with curly hair, Riri Williams.”
If you are not familiar, Riri has previously appeared in the Invincible Iron Man comic series, where she crafted a highly advanced suit of armor while studying at MIT. According to the authors of this comic, Riri Williams possesses an intellect comparable to Tony Stark, making her transition into the role of Iron Man quite understandable.
Thus, in the upcoming Civil War II comic, in addition to the introduction of several new characters in the Marvel universe, existing characters may also face changes. The iconic figure of Iron Man will be replaced by the young woman Riri Williams.
