Since taking over as CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn has initiated a series of significant changes aimed at rebuilding the DC cinematic universe (DCU), creating interconnected narratives across various platforms, such as films and video games. One of the most notable changes he has proposed is the dismissal of several prominent actors, including Henry Cavill (Superman) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Black Adam).
In The Rock’s case, the reason provided by James Gunn is that he did not want to utilize Black Adam in the initial two phases of the DCU, which could potentially extend over the next 8 to 10 years. However, according to recent information from The Wrap, the situation may be more complex than it appears, stemming from The Rock’s persistent pressure on DC to pursue his personal vision rather than adhering to the collaborative storytelling that encompasses the entire cinematic universe.

According to two high-ranking executives (anonymous) in Hollywood who shared insights with The Wrap, The Rock had reportedly opposed the idea of Zachary Levi (Shazam) appearing in the post-credit scene of Black Adam, even though the two characters have been closely linked in the comic book source material. Instead, while promoting his own film, The Rock frequently aimed to elevate Superman and hinted that audiences would soon witness a showdown between him and Henry Cavill on the big screen.
“Dwayne has positioned himself as a key figure in the film,” The Wrap quoted, “Rather than focusing on the movie, he was more interested in expanding his personal brand and creating a franchise around himself.”

Initially, DC had always pursued the idea of integrating Black Adam into the blockbuster narrative surrounding the origin story of Shazam. However, The Rock aimed to produce a solo film for his anti-hero character, which was indeed what transpired in 2022. The relationship with the original source material (drawing from Greek and Egyptian mythology) has significantly influenced the development of the character in DC comics, leading to disappointment among many fans, especially since Shazam and Black Adam had not yet encountered each other on the big screen.
Black Adam also serves as one of the primary rivals of Superman, and the clash between these two characters can only be a matter of time. However, it seems that all indications suggest that the planned ideas may not come to fruition within the DC universe, at least not with the current roster of actors from the DCEU. Moreover, the overall narrative arc appears to stem from The Rock’s desire to transform Black Adam into the central figure of DC, rather than following the collective vision of the entire cinematic universe.
The Rock has had to evaluate the consequences of his actions almost immediately after Black Adam became one of the most significant box office failures of 2022, underperforming in terms of box office revenue. The actor has abruptly distanced himself from the strategic direction set by James Gunn, and it seems that Henry Cavill, who was recently reintroduced as Superman after much speculation about his future at DC, has also been cut from the lineup, despite Superman being a crucial character in the DCU.
