On June 28, it was announced that David Corenswet will be the next actor to take on the role of Clark Kent, famously known as the superhero Superman. Director James Gunn, who is responsible for the content of the film studio, confirmed the news on his personal Twitter account. According to the announcement, Corenswet will officially make his debut in Superman: Legacy, set to be released in 2025. Additionally, Rachel Brosnahan has been cast as Lois Lane, Clark Kent’s girlfriend.
Immediately after the announcement, many fans were excited to learn more about this new casting, especially since David Corenswet is not yet a widely recognized name in the public domain. Brosnahan has previously garnered significant attention for her lead role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a series that has won 20 Emmy Awards.
Visuals reminiscent of Henry Cavill
Standing at 6 feet 4 inches (1.93m), David Corenswet is considered one of the tallest actors in Hollywood. Notably, after being confirmed for the role of Superman, many fans expressed their fondness for the actor as he has often been compared to the former Superman, Henry Cavill.
In a 2019 interview, David Corenswet once reflected on being compared to British star actors: “I actually don’t want to bring up any statement about the comparisons. I think it’s something hard to avoid in this industry. I have thought about being compared before the industry became aware of me. I also have a desire to portray Superman like Henry Cavill did.”
David Corenswet, born in 1993 in Philadelphia, began his acting career when he was still a teenager. He started performing in local theaters before moving to New York to study drama at the prestigious Juilliard School. After graduating, Corenswet landed roles in various films and began to gain recognition for his performances. His breakthrough role came in the series The Politician (2019), where he portrayed the character River Barkley. David Corenswet is noted for his striking appearance, charisma, and versatility.
Recently, the actor has received several offers from major Hollywood studios like Netflix and HBO. He starred and was a producer in the series Hollywood (2020)—a drama about the film industry in the US after World War II. Corenswet also appeared in the horror film Pearl produced by A24, released last year.
A strong connection to the Superman character
David Corenswet is also a comic book fan, especially of the DC superhero characters. He told EW: “The most wonderful thing about Superman is that there are many people who don’t like him. Superman cannot be ignored. There are many elements to explore from the character. But the complex stories surrounding a person who is different and almost has no vulnerabilities make him interesting.”
Fans might expect a completely different portrayal from David Corenswet in the iconic costume of the Man of Steel. In a previous interview, the actor expressed his admiration for Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman. However, he mentioned that he would like to present a more positive and brighter image of the character in the upcoming film. “I truly hope whoever plays this character will do so in an uplifting way. I love the darker, grittier version of Henry. However, I really want to see a more optimistic and brighter representation of Superman next.”
Following the announcement of the two main characters, the team working on Superman: Legacy is expected to continue revealing additional cast members in the near future. Besides Clark Kent and Lois Lane, familiar characters from the DC universe such as Jimmy Olsen and Lex Luthor are also expected to make an appearance.
