In the current age of the internet, news is updated every moment, which has made it increasingly challenging for traditional newspapers and magazines to publish weekly or monthly editions. Recently, Japan’s most famous manga magazine, Shounen Jump, has had to worry about a significant drop in the number of copies sold compared to previous years.
According to the announcement, Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine has seen a drop of approximately 17,000 copies sold compared to the second quarter of 2016. Similarly, Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine also experienced a decline of 40,000 copies compared to the previous quarter.
Additionally, Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine has also faced a decline of 20,000 copies, now selling only 1,015,659 copies during the third quarter of 2016.
The significant drop in sales of these leading manga magazines in Japan has been noted, with data recorded from 2014 to the present.
The data is calculated based on the number of copies sold each quarter for these three leading manga magazines. It is evident that over the last two years, the sales of manga magazines have continuously decreased, showing no signs of recovery.
The reasons attributed to this decline include the intense competition from the vast digital information landscape, with an abundance of news about manga and other related content available online. Additionally, the competition from various other entertainment forms has also contributed significantly to the drop in manga magazine sales.
